Occorre distinguere due condizioni nel quadro dei fiumi in contesto urbano. La prima condizione è legata ai fiumi che attraversano i centri abitati, i centri storici. Qui, spesso, il fiume è canalizzato o, nella peggiore delle ipotesi, tombinato o comunque confinato in un ambito molto ristretto.

La riqualificazione di “corpi idrici fortemente modificati” nelle città impone diverse considerazioni. Nel secolo scorso molti fiumi urbani sono stati regimati, canalizzati e tombinati.
Restoring ‘heavily modified water bodies’ in cities poses a unique set of issues. During the last century many urban rivers were constrained, canalised and covered over (‘culverted’).
