Per il carattere spiccatamente difensivo questi edifici prevedevano una sola apertura al piano terra, questo carattere di chiusura verso l’esterno del piano terra, risulta stravolto al piano superiore, dove eleganti inserimenti decorativi ed ampie aperture ne esaltano il prospetto.

Je dirais: "cet aspect (carattere).... change complètement à l'étage...".
Ou: "si le rez présente un caractère fermé, l'étage supérieur est complètement différent, avec ses éléments décoratifs etc..." (à remettre en excellent français, bien sûr!).
