контекст:
Обратите внимание на то, что из-за наличия просветов в символах шрифта, необходимых для того, чтобы буквы не «слипались» друг с другом, это расстояние может незначительно отличаться от заданного в диалоге

На другом форуме мне подсказали варинат font glyph, но он у меня сомнения вызывает по отношению именно к данному контексту

Explanation:
“Glyph” здесь совершенно к месту (и перед ним не надо “font”). Это именно “символ шрифта”, “character” — скорее просто символ. Во всяком случае в рассылке по разработке шрифтов DevaVu сплошь и рядом фразы типа “new glyphs added”.
