Discussion

Diana Badder (asker) Oct 20, 2008:
alta/baja discussion Thank you very much to everybody, most useful. In answer to Noni, there is no sentence either before or after because the text is actually referring to the forms that the worker has to hand in to prove his status
Noni Gilbert Riley Oct 20, 2008:
Yes, "alta" will vary in English translation acc to whether it is joining the company roll or coming back from some kind of leave.... It wd be v useful to have sentence or "before and after" if it's a list of points...Please!
Diana Badder (asker) Oct 20, 2008:
SORRY, I MEAN "alta" as incorporation or re-incorporation into a job
(this was my idea of getting round not knowing the correct translation!) as "alta" can be when you start a job OR go back to it!
and "baja" as the opposite, which I have found as being simply"absence" or it could be "signing off" I suppose, but there are two questions "baja" when you are sick (could be "leave"?) and also when you simply leave the job of your own accord
Lanna Rustage Oct 20, 2008:
General concept Smarttrans has as always given the right answer, but as general guidance: Alta has the idea of being registered, hence joining the company, being registered for social security, etc. Baja has the idea of being deleted or removed from a register, permananently or temporarily, hence dismissal, sick leave, resignation, etc, as well as combat losses!
Wil Hardman (X) Oct 20, 2008:
Hi Diana, it could be several things, you need to provide more context.
Hola Diana. ¿En qué contexto exactamente?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "no, I will use half Smartrans and half this person: leave in general and contracting or re-contracting Thanks very much"
1 hr

start a job, join a company, return to work) / leave, terminate services, quit

same line followed by other colleagues; there are multiple options

8 hrs

hiring/separation

baja laboral: leave
baja maternal: maternity leave
baja médica: sick leave
baja por jubilación: retirement
baja voluntaria: early retirement
darse de alta en la empresa: join the company
darse de alta en la Seguridad Social: register with Social Security
Note from asker:
yes I feel that "leave" is good for baja as it covers all types not so clear about "alta" but maybe "joining or re-joining
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : baja voluntaria can also be voluntary severance...
