: Los ateneos médicos son reuniones clínicas donde se discuten los casos, no asociaciones médicas.

: That's how I know them./Sounds good to me, and very true.Regarding the question, your links say "Annual grand rounds" which match the "anual" part of the question. So I think this is the one in this context.

: Grand rounds (pase de visita in Spanish) involves the medical staff going from room to room reviewing each patient. A different concept.

Medical/Clinical Case Studies
This is a weekly, or biweekly event (sadly, sometimes even less frequent) where physicians meet in a classroom/auditorium and discuss a particular case in excruciating detail. This differs from Grand Rounds, where the physicians round on all (or most) patients and the cases are discussed briefly, with special attention paid to the intersting cases.
To put it in a nutshell, grand rounds are a sort of inventory of all the patients that are hospitalized. The patients are still right there in the bed and under treatment. Case studies are of a single case, almost exclusively once the patient has long been discharged, sometimes from a completely different hospital. This allows 20/20 hindsight so that the different treatment decisions can be critiqued. It's more of a classroom type exercise.
Ateneos Medicos can also refer to professional associations, specialist boards, (American College of Surgeons, for example), etc., though it's not very common in modern use.
