doctor/medical visits
This is how I would handle it. You could also say 'medical consultations', but that can be confused with consultations between doctors.

I didn't see Rich's answer because I was researching mine. I was initially considering 'medical consultations' until I looked it up and saw the definitions. Still, it's a valid option.

For billing purposes, health insurance uses 'visits'', and there is a code for it.

Muriel makes a good point about possible confusion with consultations between doctors and I think it's important to bear in mind that some of the statistics in the source text also apply to medical/patient care in general, and I get the feeling that the 34.689.434 **atenciones médicas** statistic does refer to consultations between patients and doctors in particular as opposed to general medical care, in which case, and in light of the other statistics, this needs to be made clear.
Perhaps: "patient-doctor consultations" would be more fitting and accurate.

Note from asker:
Muchas gracias, Liz querida. En este país, una "atención médica" son los minutos que el doctor le dedica al paciente en la consulta ;) |
