Spanish term

a pie de cama

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care
One final query from a text on surgical debridement. I´m not sure if the author is referring to preparation of the wound bed here. TIA, Jason.

Cortante. Sólo cuando hay tejido necrótico y posible infección o sepsis; es rápido, selectivo, y debe ser realizado por un experto; puede ser doloroso y nunca deben estirarse o arrancarse los tejidos necróticos y se realiza a lo llamado **“a pie de cama”**. A este tipo de desbridamiento se le denomina quirúrgico el realizado por el cirujano en quirófano con una amplia escisión de tejido no viable y parte de tejido sano e incluso hueso.

Discussion

Charles Davis Feb 22, 2012:
In this case the English idiom is much more sensible. The doctor wouldn't get on very well standing at the foot of the bed.
Christine Walsh Feb 22, 2012:
I'm sure it means 'bedside' in this context, but I must say the Spanish version isn't too clear.
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2012:
@Emma That's very interesting. A while ago I had to translate an art project entirely based on the distinction between "cama" and "lecho". Quite tough to find the right words! I did quite a lot of research, but didn't come across this example. It makes sense, though. I'll add it to my collection.
Emma Goldsmith Feb 22, 2012:
bed = cama/lecho I'm afraid your idea of wound bed is a false friend in Spanish.
Only "lecho" would be used in this context, not "cama". (El lecho de la herida).

agree anademahomar : Surgical debridement can be performed in the OR or at bedside, depending on the extent of the necrotic material. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debridement
