This is difficult because there must be a long story behind his reaction. We don't know whether or not his emotions were positive or negative, happy or sad. I was tempted to say "hide his emotion(s), but dissimulating has other facets. Whether or not emotions should be plural depends on the context; singular would indicate his emotional state and plural would indication a range of feelings.
