ProZ.com powwow: Translator scams - how to recognize them

Dear colleagues,
As a regular reader of the ProZ forum section, I have noticed an alarming increase in scams targeting translators and decided that too many of us are not aware of them. The scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and knowledgable about how the translation business works, so it is up to us to a) recognize them when we are targeted and b) get the word out to other translators. The discussion threads show many colleagues are ill-informed on this subject and find out the hard way, for example, after spending time on a phony translation or even losing money in an advance-fee fraud. This doesn't have to happen, and it's up to us to make sure our fellow translators don't become victims.
A ProZ colleague, Lee Roth, has put together a PPP presentation on this topic and kindly sent it to me to use at the powwow. I hope you will join us to discuss and brainstorm on how to stop this growing threat.

Sorry, we've just moved away from beautiful Tuebingen, but I would suggest the Padefke Kaffee not far from the Bahnhoff. Hope you'll all have fun!

I'm sure we will. It's a lovely small city with lots of atmosphere, so you probably miss it. I also appreciate the café suggestion. It's very welcome as I am a fairly recent arrival to these parts and don't know my way around yet.

http://www.ludwigs.cc/ Although Padeffke was recommended, they don't take reservations on weekends, which was too risky. I therefore selected Ludwig's, which I have been in and it's very nice, with lots of glass and light. It's close to the train station and there is a covered parking lot nearby for those who are driving: http://www.ps-huefner.de/standort_suche.php?ort=Tubingen The reservation is for 15 people from 13:30 to 17:00, ask for the"Übersetzer-Treff". Please note the time change, which was suggested because their brunch is very popular and could still be full at 1 p.m. Looking forward to seeing/meeting you all there! If you plan on brunch there beforehand, make sure to make a reservation in plenty of time.
