Gauja sākas Vidzemē, Piebalgā un atvijas cauri Vidzemei uz Rīgas jūras līci. Strauja, nevaldāma un krāšņa. Apmēram 93,5 km garumā Gaujas senleja ir iekļauta nacionālajā parkā. Gaujas nacionālais parks dibināts 1973.gada 14. septembrī – 92 048ha platībā ar 7 funkcionālajām zonām. Pirms tam neliels nacionālais parks Gaujas senlejā tika izveidots 20.gadsimta 20-tajos gados zemes reformas laikā Siguldā, iekļaujot tajā triju muižu mežus. Karu un varu maiņās nacionālais parks savu nosaukumu nesaglabāja. Pēc vairākkārtējām uzmērīšanām un aizsardzības plānu izstrādes, Gaujas nacionālajam parkam apstiprinātas piecas funkcionālās zonas: dabas rezervāta, dabas lieguma, ainavas aizsardzības, kultūrvēsturiskā un neitrālā zona. Platība 91 790 ha. Gaujas nacionālais parks izveidots, lai aizsargātu unikālo Gaujas upes senleju ar pieteku ielejām, devona smilšakmeņu atsegumiem, bagātu floru un faunu, daudziem kultūrvēsturiskajiem pieminekļiem. Gaujas nacionālā parka 40 gadi aizritējuši, to pētot, sargājot un kopjot.
Translation - English People have been fascinated by the beauty of the Gauja already long ago, praising the river’s beauty in folk songs, popular songs, in the guides for travellers and music. The Gauja River begins in Vidzeme, Piebalga and, meandering through Vidzeme, flows into the Gulf of Riga. Swift, unruly and magnificent. Approximately 93.5 km of the Gauja River Valley are included in the territory of the Gauja National Park. Gauja National Park was established on 14 September 1973 – with the overall territory reaching 92 048 ha and was divided into seven functional zones. Before that, a smaller national park was established within the territory of the Gauja River Valley in the 20-ties of the 20th century during the Sigulda land reform, including the territory of the forests around three manors. During the wars and authority shifts the national park did not save its name. After several surveys were carried out and protection plan developed, five functional zones were defined: nature preserves, nature reserves, landscape protection, culture-historical and neutral zones. With an overall area of 91 790 ha, Gauja National Park was established in order to protect the unique Gauja River Valley, as well as its adjoining valleys, sandstone rock formations, which were formed during the Devonian Period, the rich flora and fauna and many historical and cultural monuments. Forty years have passed, researching, protecting and managing the Gauja National Park.

Iedzīvotāju iesaistīšanos kāda procesa novērošanā un datu pierakstīšanu sauc par sabiedrisko monitoringu (sabiedrisko novērošanu, kontroli, uzraudzību). Novērojumus var veikt jebkurš, kuram šie jautājumi interesē. Novērot un aprakstīt var gan koku alejas, gan arī par dižkokus, gaisa un ūdens kvalitāti, baltos stārķus, griezes, bebrus, latvāņus un vēl citas dabas tēmas. Novērojumus var veikt gan jauni, gan spēka gados, gan jau pensijā esoši cilvēki. Liels prieks, ka par dabas saglabāšanu interesējas jaunieši. Kopumā ir izstrādātas 19 novērojumu veikšanas programmas.
Cilvēki, iesaistoties sabiedriskajā monitoringā, sāk ievērot un apzināt dabas vērtības, sāk tās aizsargāt un apsaimniekot. Izjūtot pētāmo objektu vai teritoriju vērtību, cilvēks pakāpeniski, neatkarīgi no tā juridiskās aizsardzības, sāk rūpēties par šo dabas daļu – aizsargāt, nereti – arī apsaimniekot, piemēram, pļaut vai noganīt „orhideju” pļavu u.c. Šeit darbojas princips – es varu aizsargāt to, ko es saprotu, ko novērtēju.

The involvement of the society in observation of a process and data collection is called public monitoring (public surveillance, control, supervision). Observations can be made by anyone who is interested in these issues. Observation and description include both tree avenues, and venerable trees, and air and water quality, white storks, corncrakes, beavers, hogweed and other nature-research topics. Observations can make everyone: young, middle-aged people and seniors. It is a great pleasure that young people are interested in nature conservation. In general, there are 19 observation programmes developed.
People, engaging in the public monitoring, start to observe and estimate nature’s values and begin to protect and manage them. Understanding the value of the studied objects or the value of territories, people, gradually, regardless of legal protection, start to take care of this part of nature – to protect, and often, also to manage it, for example, to mow or pasture an “orchid” meadow, etc.. Here works the principle - I can protect what I understand and evaluate.

Environmental Education Centre - Forest School "Pauguri" is located in Gauja National Park, at the Līgatne Nature Trails. The primary purpose of the Environmental Education Centre is to introduce people to the flora and fauna of Latvia, as well as to educate them in the field of the nature protection, offering to discover, explore and feel the diverse presence of nature.
The centre offers great opportunities for groups of schoolchildren, families and adults, including
• interactive exhibition "hide and seek" (about forest animals);
• the day of biodiversity: Water Day in spring, Bat’s Day in summer, Mushroom Day in autumn, and Nature Day in winter;
• possibility to try stations of feelings;
• teaching materials (worksheets, guides to nature exploration and practical experiments).
Natural educational offered at the Forest School "Pauguri" is based on hands-on experience, skills and information acquisition, learning important things for real life from nature in nature, and learning about and exploring the basic laws of nature.
