Source text - Spanish En España, hasta mediados de los años 80, el acogimiento residencial ha sido la respuesta predominante para la atención de los niños en situación de desprotección (Bravo and Del Valle, 2009). Con la introducción de la Ley 21/87 de reforma del Código Civil en materia de acogimiento y adopción se planteó un nuevo sistema de protección a la infancia, estableciendo como principio elemental la crianza del niño en un contexto familiar, bien fuera por la recuperación de las funciones de buena parentalidad por parte de las familias (con programas de intervención familiar y apoyos materiales), o bien mediante el acogimiento de un niño por otra familia o la adopción. Con esta reforma legal se pretendía convertir el residential care en un recurso de transición o emergencia, para aquellos casos que necesitaban un tiempo de evaluación, de recuperación de sus familias o de preparación para una incorporación a una nueva familia. La prioridad en las agendas pasaba a ser el desarrollo de los programas de acogimiento familiar.
Sin embargo, tras más de 20 años de ese cambio de planteamiento, el balance evidencia el fracaso en la apuesta por las alternativas de family care. Según las estadísticas nacionales (Ministry of Health and Social Policy, 2011), el número de altas de acogimientos residenciales en 2009 se situó en 9.014 casos, mientras que el acogimiento familiar correspondió a unos 4.216 nuevos casos. Si en vez de tomar el indicador de altas, tomáramos el de número de niños en cada una de las medidas a final de año (2009) observaríamos que se encuentran en residential care 14.857 casos y en family foster care 21.831. Así pues, cada año (los indicadores de años anteriores son similares) ingresan en residential care muchos más niños que en family foster care, pero en un día determinado del año existen más casos en foster care que en residential care. Esta aparente paradoja se debe al hecho de que en España el foster care es en un 80% kinship care, y estos niños en su mayoría son acogidos desde muy temprana edad hasta que se hacen adultos, e incluso cuando se trata de foster care con non-relatives la permanencia es muy prolongada (Del Valle et al., 2009).
Translation - English In Spain, the predominant solution for children at risk until the middle of the 1980s was residential foster care (Bravo and Del Valle, 2009). A new system of child protection was laid out with the introduction of the 1987 Foster Care and Adoption Law (Ley de Acogimiento y Adopción) which established the family context of a child’s upbringing as a fundamental principle, by remedial help to develop good parenting skills on the part of the families (with family intervention programs and support materials) or by placing the child with another family or by adoption. This legal reform was intended to turn residential care into a transitional or emergency resource, for those cases which needed time for evaluation, family recovery or preparation for placement in a new family. The development of family placement programs became a priority.
Nevertheless, after more than 20 years of this approach, the balance of evidence suggests that it has failed in the face of alternatives to family care. According to national statistics (Ministry of Health and Social Policy, 2011), there were 9,014 new residential placements in 2009 while in family fostering there were 4,216 new cases. If, instead of the new placements, we look at number of children in each type of placement at the end of the year (2009), we see that there were 14,857 cases in residential care and 21,831 cases in family foster care. So each year (and the indicators for previous years are very similar) many more children enter residential care than family foster care. However, on any given day there are more cases in family foster care than in residential care. This apparent paradox is due to the fact that in Spain kinship care accounts for 80 percent of foster care and the majority of those children are fostered from an early age until adulthood. Even when we look at foster care with non-relatives the stay is very long (Del Valle et al., 2009).

Source text - Spanish El locus of control (LOC) es una variable frecuentemente evaluada en Psicología y Educación debido a que juega un importante papel en diferentes contextos (Cheng, Cheung, Chio & Chan, 2012; Severino, Aiello, Cascio, Ficarra & Messina, 2011; Suárez-Álvarez, Campillo-Álvarez, Fonseca-Pedrero, García-Cueto & Muñiz, 2013; Urbig & Monsen, 2012). No existe un acuerdo unánime sobre cuantas dimensiones componen la estructura factorial del LOC (Ferrando, Demestre, Anguiano-Carrasco & Chico, 2011; Kormanik & Rocco, 2009; Levenson, 1981; Niles, 1981; Paulhus & Van Selst, 1990; Rotter, 1966, 1975), si bien los modelos teóricos más comúnmente aceptados tienden a rechazar la estructura unidimensional (Levenson, 1981; Paulhus & Van Selst, 1990; Suárez-Álvarez, Pedrosa, García-Cueto & Muñiz, 2013; Thompson & Prendergast, 2013). Por tanto, el locus of control no constituye un continuo compuesto por dos polos tal y como se propuso en su origen (Rotter, 1966) sino que una persona podría tener simultáneamente un estilo atribucional externo y un estilo atribucional interno (Suárez-Álvarez et al., 2013). Por ello cabe pensar que la causa de una conducta se pueda atribuir a lo que uno haga (internal LOC) y al mismo tiempo aceptar que esa situación también puede estar influenciada por sucesos azarosos (external LOC).
En un meta-análisis reciente, Cheng, Cheung, Chio y Chan (2012) encuentran que el LOC externo no se relaciona de igual forma con ansiedad y depresión en todas las culturas. Es decir, el significado del LOC es cultural y, por tanto, diferente en función de la población. La explicación de estas diferencias podría tener sus raíces en los valores culturales de cada sociedad (Hofstede, 2001; Triandis & Suh, 2002). Así por ejemplo, sociedades individualistas como las occidentales tienden a responsabilizar al individuo de sus conductas, mientras que sociedades colectivistas como las asiáticas son generalmente más sensibles a influencias externas (Cheng et al., 2012). Eso podría llegar a explicar que las diferencias entre europeos y americanos sean pequeñas mientras que las diferencias aumentan cuando se comparan americanos con asiáticos (Rossier, Dahourou & McCrae, 2005; Yamaguchi, Gelfand, Ohashi & Zemba, 2005).
Estudiar el LOC a través de la cultura implica poder asegurar una equivalencia en la medición del constructo. Por lo tanto, si se quieren hacer comparaciones multigrupo, se tendría que justificar que los instrumentos de medida están funcionando exactamente de la misma forma y que el constructo evaluado tiene tanto la misma estructura teórica como el mismo significado psicológico para los grupos de interés (Byrne, 2008). En otras palabras, no sería admisible comparar puntuaciones de personas pertenecientes a dos grupos culturales en un constructo que no tuviera el mismo significado en las dos culturas. Tampoco tendría sentido interpretar los resultados de un test si su aplicación en dos contextos se asocia con errores de medida diferentes (Elosua, 2005). Ambas cuestiones quedan supeditadas a la comprobación de la factorial invariance (Byrne, 2008; Dimitrov. 2010; Elosua & Muñiz, 2010; Supple, Su, Plunkett, Peterson & Bush, 2012; Zecca et al., 2012). Van de Vijver and Leung (1997) propusieron tres formas de equivalencia factorial: configural invariance, en la que el proceso psicológico subyacente es el mismo en los diferentes grupos ya que todos los factores están configurados por los mismos ítems; measurement invariance, en las que, además, la métrica de las escalas es la misma; y scalar invariance, en las que el origen de la escala es también el mismo para los diferentes grupos.
Si bien no existe un acuerdo unánime sobre la dimensionalidad del LOC, tampoco parece que exista acuerdo sobre su measurement equivalence a través a de las culturas. Los resultados encontrados son altamente inconsistentes, cuando se utiliza la escala unidimensional de Rotter los resultados mostraron una estructura factorial diferente para African, European and Indian (Furnham & Henry, 1980). Smith, Trompenaars and Dugan (1995) llevaron a cabo una investigación transcultural en 43 países utilizando Rotter´s scale e identificaron tres dimensiones relativamente cercanas a las propuestas por Levenson (1981): una dimensión de internality y dos de externality (poweful others and chance). Otros autores también confirman la estructura multidimensional de Levenson entre Scottish, Spanish and Irish (Bonetti et al., 2001), y entre US and Indian (Ghorpade, Hattrup & Lackritz, 1999). Cualquier sesgo en la traducción y adaptación del instrumento, ya sea en función del ítem, del constructo o del tipo de administración (Van de Vijver & Hambleton, 1996), afectaría directamente a la equivalencia métrica del instrumento y, por lo tanto, a la comparación de puntuaciones entre los grupos (Byrne, 2008; Dimitrov, 2010).
El objetivo de esta investigación fue añadir nuevas evidencias de validez en relación con la factorial invariance del LOC. Más concretamente, se estudió la cross-cultural equivalence de la estructura bidimensional del LOC (i.e. internal LOC and external LOC). Para ello, se realizó una evaluación progresiva de la factorial invariance entre españoles, chilenos y británicos using structural equation modeling (SEM) within the framework of a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model. Una vez confirmada la cross-cultural equivalence del instrumento de medida, se realizó un estudio transcultural del LOC en función del país de pertenencia.
Translation - English Locus of Control (LOC) is a variable which is frequently evaluated in psychology and education owing to the important role it plays in different contexts (Cheng, Cheung, Chio & Chan, 2012; Severino, Aiello, Cascio, Ficarra & Messina, 2011; Suárez-Álvarez, Campillo-Álvarez, Fonseca-Pedrero, García-Cueto & Muñiz, 2013; Urbig & Monsen, 2012). There is no unanimous agreement on how many dimensions make up the factorial structure of the LOC (Ferrando, Demestre, Anguiano-Carrasco & Chico, 2011; Kormanik & Rocco, 2009; Levenson, 1981; Niles, 1981; Paulhus & Van Selst, 1990; Rotter, 1966, 1975), although the most commonly accepted theoretical models tend to reject the unidimensional structure (Levenson, 1981; Paulhus & Van Selst, 1990; Suárez-Álvarez, Pedrosa, García-Cueto & Muñiz, 2013; Thompson & Prendergast, 2013). In other words, the locus of control is not a continuum between two poles as originally proposed (Rotter 1966), a person may simultaneously have an external attributional style and an internal attributional style (Suárez-Álvarez et al., 2013). Therefore it is reasonable to think that the cause of a behaviour may be attributed to what one does (internal LOC), while at the same time, accepting that the situation may also be influenced by events outside one’s control (external LOC).
In a recent meta-analysis, Cheng, Cheung, Chio and Chan (2012) found that external LOC was not related to anxiety and depression in the same way in all cultures. That is, the significance of LOC is cultural and, hence, different depending on the population. The roots of these differences may be found in the cultural values in each society (Hofstede, 2001; Triandis & Suh, 2002). So, for example, individualistic societies, such as those in the West, tend to place the responsibility on an individual for his or her actions, whereas collectivist societies, like those in Asia are generally more sensitive to external influences (Cheng et al., 2012). This might explain the fact that differences between Europeans and Americans are small whereas when comparing Americans and Asians they are much bigger (Rossier, Dahourou & McCrae, 2005; Yamaguchi, Gelfand, Ohashi & Zemba, 2005).
Studying LOC across cultures means being able to ensure equivalence when measuring the construct. Hence, if one wants to make multi-group comparisons, one has to demonstrate that the measuring instruments work in exactly the same way and that the construct under evaluation has both the same theoretical structure and psychological significance for the groups of interest (Byrne, 2008). In other words, it would not be acceptable to compare scores of people belonging to two cultural groups in a construct that did not have the same significance in both cultures. Neither would it make sense to interpret the results of a test if its application in two contexts is associated with different errors of measurement (Elousa 2005). Both questions are contingent on checking factorial invariance (Byrne, 2008; Dimitrov. 2010; Elosua & Muñiz, 2010; Supple, Su, Plunkett, Peterson & Bush, 2012; Zecca et al., 2012). Van de Vijver and Leung (1997) proposed three forms of factorial equivalence: configural invariance, in which the underlying psychological process is the same in the different groups since all the factors are shaped by the same items; measurement invariance, in which, in addition, the scale metrics are the same; and scalar invariance, in which the origin of the scale is also the same for the different groups.
There is no unanimous agreement on the dimensionality of LOC, neither does there seem to exist any agreement on its measurement equivalence across cultures. The results are highly inconsistent. When Rotter’s unidimensional scale is used, the results show a different factorial structure for Africans, Europeans and Indians (Furnham & Henry, 1980). Smith, Trompenaars and Dugan (1995) headed a transcultural investigation in 43 countries using Rotter’s scale and identified three dimensions which were relatively close to those proposed by Levenson (1981): one dimension of internality and two of externality (powerful others and chance). Other authors have also confirmed Levenson’s multidimensional structure between Scots, Spanish and Irish (Bonetti et al., 2001), and between US and Indian groups (Ghorpade, Hattrup & Lackritz, 1999). On the other hand, some researchers reject the equivalence of this multidimensional structure between Caucasian Americans, Filipino Americans and Latino Americans (Malcarne, Fernández & Flores, 2005), and across young, middle-age, and elderly age groups (Shewchuk, Foelker, Camp & Blanchard-Fields, 1992). Rossier, Dahourou and McCrae (2005) tested whether the bidimensional structure (internal and external LOC) was a better fit than the multidimensional one between Switzerland and Burkina Faso.
It is not clear if the discrepancies in these results are due to measurement problems or to cultural variations in the LOC (Rossier, Dahourou, & McCrae, 2005). It seems as though one possible explanation might be found in the process of adapting the measuring instruments, so the process of translating an instrument from one language into another involves much more than mere back translation (Hambleton, Merenda, & Spielberger, 2005). In addition, it must be remembered that the main interest in transcultural studies is usually the comparison of scores according to the home country and therefore an adequate translation and adaptation of the instrument is necessary. Any bias in the translation or adaptation, whether in the item, the construct or how it is administered (Van de Vijver & Hambleton, 1996), will directly affect the instrument’s equivalence metrics and, therefore, the comparison of scores between groups (Byrne, 2008; Dimitrov, 2010).
The goal of this research was to add new evidence of validity in relation to the factorial invariance of the LOC. More specifically, it looked at the cross-cultural equivalence of the bidimensional structure of LOC (i.e. internal LOC and external LOC). In order to do this, a progressive evaluation of the factorial invariance between Spanish, Chilean and British groups was carried out using structural equation modelling (SEM) within the framework of a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model. Once the cross-cultural equivalence of the measuring instrument was confirmed, a transcultural study of LOC was carried out according to home country.

Las revisiones de Cooper (1989) y Cooper, Robinson y Patall (2006) indican que durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX el tópico más estudiado fue la relación entre el tiempo invertido y el rendimiento, encontrándose que, si bien esta asociación no es estrictamente lineal (Cooper y Valentine, 2001), en términos generales es positiva, aunque su fuerza depende de la edad, siendo los efectos más claros en educación secundaria que en primaria (Cooper, Steenbergen-Hu y Dent, 2012). Igualmente existen estudios que señalan que la conducta ante los deberes podría variar dependiendo del área estudiada (Trautwein y Lüdtke, 2007, 2009). Sin embargo, con el cambio de siglo, los estudios multinivel aquilataron esta relación más adecuadamente, demostrando que el tiempo dedicado tiene poco efecto sobre los resultados (De Jong, Westerhof y Creemers, 2000; Farrow, Tymms y Henderson, 1999; Murillo y Martínez-Garrido, 2013; Núñez, Vallejo, Rosário, Tuero y Valle, 2014) y que, en caso de significación estadística, el efecto es negativo (Chang, Wall, Tare, Golonka y Vatz, 2014; Trautwein, 2007; Trautwein, Köller, Schmitz y Baumert, 2002; Trautwein, Schnyder, Niggli, Neumann y Lüdtke, 2009). Estos estudios señalan que el alumnado con más dificultades de aprendizaje y concentración necesita más tiempo para completar sus deberes.
Constatada la limitada capacidad predictiva del tiempo de deberes, la investigación viró hacia otros aspectos de la conducta, tales como el esfuerzo empleado o la gestión de las TEH, así como hacia factores cognitivos, afectivos y de personalidad, que resultaron significativos una vez descontados rendimiento previo, capacidad intelectual y antecedentes sociológicos (Dettmers et al., 2011; Suárez-Álvarez, Fernández-Alonso y Muñiz, 2014; Trautwein y Lüdtke, 2007). Este giro hacia variables psicológicas resultó muy productivo a ambos lados del Atlántico al vincular las TEH con variables capitales en el rendimiento académico (Ramdass y Zimmerman, 2011; Trautwein y Köller, 2003; Trautwein et al., 2006, Xu, 2013). Las nuevas líneas de estudio mostraron el potencial de la autorregulación, la autoeficacia y las atribuciones causales (Bembenutty y White, 2013; Kitsantas, Cheema y Ware, 2011; Rosário et al., 2009; Zimmerman y Kitsantas, 2005). Por ejemplo, Kitsantas y Zimmerman (2009) concluyen que los deberes mejoran la autoeficacia y responsabilidad hacia las tareas y ayudan al desarrollo de técnicas de estudio. Stoeger y Ziegler (2008) muestran que la autorregulación podía entrenarse durante las TEH. Estos autores implementan un modelo de crecimiento jerárquico-lineal y señalan que los estudiantes que mejor aprovecharon el programa eran quienes tenían más baja autoeficacia al inicio del mismo, lo que evidencia que una adecuada planificación de las TEH puede tener efectos compensatorios. Igualmente, los estudios de Xu y colaboradores conectaron conducta ante los deberes y autorregulación, mostrado que las tasas de realización (Xu, 2011), el aprovechamiento del tiempo (Xu, Yuan, Xu y Xu, 2014) o la gestión y organización de las tareas y del ambiente de trabajo (Xu y Wu, 2013), se vinculan a la utilidad atribuida a los deberes, y a mejoras en la actitud y percepción de la propia competencia. Tomados en su conjunto los datos indican que, en lo relativo a la conducta del alumnado ante los deberes el cómo importa más que el cuánto.
El papel del profesorado: características y seguimiento de las TEH
La investigación sobre las TEH asignadas por el profesorado ha demostrado que éstas también presentan los rasgos propios de un hecho multinivel (Dettmers, Trautwein, Lüdtke, Kunter y Baumert, 2010; Xu, 2012; Xu y Wu, 2013). Las dos características de las TEH más estudiadas en relación con el profesorado han sido la frecuencia y el volumen de trabajo asignado. Cuando se han estudiado conjuntamente en muestras de educación secundaria la frecuencia aparece mejor conectada al rendimiento matemático que el tamaño (Fernández-Alonso, Suárez-Álvarez y Muñiz, 2015; Trautwein, 2007; Trautwein et al., 2002). En todo caso, cuando el tamaño de la asignación se ha analizado por separado también ha mostrado encontrarse positivamente asociado al rendimiento académico (OCDE, 2013).
Por su parte, la relación entre el control y feedback de las TEH y el rendimiento no aparece bien resuelta. Elawar y Corno (1985) relacionan experimentalmente feedback docente con mejoras en resultados y actitudes hacia las matemáticas, sin embargo, la investigación con diseños ex-post facto no confirma estos resultados de forma unívoca. Trautwein, Niggli, Schnyder y Lüdtke (2009) establecen dos estilos de feedback: controlador (comprobar la realización de las TEH) y motivador (fomentar la responsabilidad del alumnado ante las TEH), pero no encuentran diferencias en el rendimiento en función del estilo docente. Tampoco Trautwein et al. (2002) encuentran una relación significativa entre feedback y rendimiento, aunque se observa una interacción positiva entre el tamaño de las TEH y la frecuencia de corrección, que se puede interpretar como la consecuencia que tendría sobre los resultados un estilo docente ineficiente, es decir, aquel que combina gran cantidad de deberes y poco seguimiento de los mismos. Algo más de éxito han tenido los estudios multinivel que relacionan feedback docente y otras variables en educación secundaria. Xu (2012) y Xu y Wu (2013) encuentran asociaciones positivas a nivel individual entre el feedback y la gestión y percepción de la utilidad de las TEH, si bien estos estudios no señalan efectos significativos a nivel de aula. Con respecto al control docente se encuentran asociaciones positivas con las emociones, el tiempo y el esfuerzo (Trautwein y Lüdtke, 2007; Trautwein, Niggli et al., 2009) aunque otros estudios de la misma línea de investigación no confirman estos hallazgos (Trautwein et al., 2006; Trautwein y Lüdtke, 2009). En definitiva, los estudios multinivel apuntan a que el efecto del control y feedback docente es más nítido a nivel individual que a nivel de aula. En todo caso, la influencia sobre los resultados educativos parece ser indirecta, ya que el control y feedback docente parecen asociarse antes con la conducta ante los deberes que con el rendimiento escolar (Núñez et al., 2015).
Translation - English Student homework behaviour
Reviews from Cooper (1989) and Cooper, Robinson & Patall (2006) indicate that during the second half of the twentieth century the relationship between time spent and achievement was the most often studied topic, finding that, while it is not a strictly linear association (Cooper & Valentine, 2001), it is in general terms positive. However, the strength of the association depends on age, with effects more clearly seen in secondary rather than primary education (Cooper, Steenbergen-Hu & Dent, 2012). Similarly, there are studies which indicate that homework behaviour can vary depending on the topic studied (Trautwein & Lüdtke, 2007, 2009). In this century, multilevel studies have refined this relationship and shown that time spent has little effect on results (De Jong, Westerhof & Creemers, 2000; Farrow, Tymms & Henderson, 1999; Murillo & Martínez-Garrido, 2013; Núñez, Vallejo, Rosário, Tuero & Valle, 2014) and, with statistical significance, the effect is negative (Chang, Wall, Tare, Golonka & Vatz, 2014; Trautwein, 2007; Trautwein, Köller, Schmitz & Baumert, 2002; Trautwein, Schnyder, Niggli, Neumann & Lüdtke, 2009). These studies show that students who have more difficulty learning or concentrating need more time to do their homework.
With the limited predictive capability of time spent on homework, research turned towards other aspects of behaviour, such as effort or homework management, and towards cognitive, affective and personality factors, which are significant once previous academic achievement, intellectual capability, and sociological background have been discounted (Dettmers et al., 2011; Suárez-Álvarez, Fernández-Alonso & Muñiz, 2014; Trautwein & Lüdtke, 2007). This turn towards psychological variables has been very productive on both sides of the Atlantic, linking homework with key variables in academic achievement (Ramdass & Zimmerman, 2011; Trautwein & Köller, 2003; Trautwein et al., 2006, Xu, 2013). These new lines of research have shown the potential of self-regulation, self-efficacy, and causal attribution (Bembenutty & White, 2013; Kitsantas, Cheema & Ware, 2011; Rosário et al., 2009; Zimmerman & Kitsantas, 2005). For example, Kitsantas & Zimmerman (2009) concluded that homework improves self-efficacy and responsibility towards homework, and helps the development of study techniques. Stoeger & Ziegler (2008) showed that self-regulation can be trained during homework. These authors used a hierarchical-linear model of growth and indicated that the students who got the most out of the program were those who had lowest self-efficacy at the beginning, which is evidence that appropriate homework planning can have beneficial effects. Similarly, research by Xu and his team linked attitude to homework and self-regulation, showing that rates of completion (Xu, 2011), making best use of time (Xu, Yuan, Xu & Xu, 2014), homework management and organisation, and the work environment (Xu & Wu, 2013), are linked to the perceived usefulness of the homework, and to improvements in attitude and students’ perception of their own ability. Taken together, the data indicate that, in terms of a student’s approach to homework how is more important than how much.
The role of the teacher: homework characteristics and followup
Research into homework assignment by teachers has shown that it demonstrates multilevel traits (Dettmers, Trautwein, Lüdtke, Kunter & Baumert, 2010; Xu, 2012; Xu & Wu, 2013). The two homework characteristics related to the teacher which have been most often studied are frequency and volume of work assigned. When studied together in secondary education samples, frequency appears more closely connected to mathematics achievement than amount (Fernández-Alonso, Suárez-Álvarez & Muñiz, 2015; Trautwein, 2007; Trautwein et al., 2002). Nonetheless, when amount of homework assigned is analysed separately it also is found to have a positive association with academic achievement (OCDE, 2013).
The relationship between achievement and control of homework or feedback from homework does not seem so clear. Elawar & Corno (1985) experimentally linked teaching feedback with improved results and attitudes towards homework, however ex-post facto research did not unequivocally confirm these results. Trautwein, Niggli, Schnyder & Lüdtke (2009) established two types of feedback: controlling (which checks that homework has been done), and motivating (encouraging the student to be responsible for the homework), but did not find any difference in achievement in terms of teaching style. Nor did Trautwein et al. (2002) find any significant relationship between feedback and achievement, although they did see a positive interaction between the amount of homework and the frequency of correction, which was interpreted as a possible consequence of an inefficient teaching style, i.e. one which combines a large quantity of homework with little followup. Multilevel studies which link teacher feedback to other secondary education variables have been more successful. Xu (2012) and Xu & Wu (2013) found positive associations at an individual level between feedback, management, and perception of usefulness of homework, although that research did not indicate significant class-level effects. In terms of teacher control, positive correlations have been found with emotions, time, and effort (Trautwein & Lüdtke, 2007; Trautwein, Niggli et al., 2009) although other, similar multilevel studies note that the effect of feedback and control is more distinct at the individual, rather than the class level. In any case, its influence on academic results seems to be indirect, as teacher control and feedback seem to be associated more with students’ homework behaviour than school achievement (Núñez et al., 2015).
Spanish to English: Quality of life of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disability in Spain

Las puntuaciones de calidad de vida permiten desarrollar estándares de actuación y sugerir estrategias de mejora (Gómez et al. 2013). Por ello, el principal objetivo de este trabajo ha consistido en analizar detalladamente los resultados personales relacionados con calidad de vida de niños y adolescentes con TEA. En nuestro estudio, aunque las puntuaciones superaron el punto medio teórico de la escala –y por tanto podría decirse que, en términos generales, las puntuaciones son positivas–, los resultados podrían mejorarse sustancialmente con la provisión de los apoyos necesarios.
Más concretamente, se encontraron los resultados más positivos en las dimensiones bienestar material, bienestar físico y desarrollo personal. Un análisis más detenido de los ítems revela que el ítem que obtiene las puntuaciones más favorables y que parece por tanto superado en los organizaciones proveedores de servicios españolas en la actualidad es el referente a respetar la privacidad de los participantes (en la dimensión de derechos). En la misma línea, el resto de ítems en los que se obtienen las mejores puntuaciones son aquellos que tienen como protagonistas a los familiares o profesionales: proporcionar ayudas técnicas y recursos materiales, velar por sus derechos, mantener la documentación en regla e informar sobre el uso de medidas de contención.
A la luz de estos resultados, podemos concluir que los niños y adolescentes participantes en este estudio que reciben servicios y apoyos en nuestro país tienen especialmente bien cubiertas sus necesidades más básicas –bienestar material y físico– , lo que no resulta sorprendente si tenemos en cuenta que en los últimos años ha imperado una perspectiva rehabilitadora en la que los principales objetivos consistían en satisfacer las necesidades básicas (bienestar material) y reducir el impacto de las deficiencias (bienestar físico). Más extraordinario resulta el hecho de encontrar resultados tan positivos en la dimensión desarrollo personal, pues estudios semejantes al presente pero realizados con adultos con discapacidad intelectual encuentran ésta como una de las dimensiones con mayores limitaciones (Gómez 2010; Gómez et al. 2011; Verdugo et al. 2010). Quizás en este caso, a diferencia de los estudios anteriormente señalados, al encontrarse todos los participantes aún en el sistema educativo estén recibiendo más y mejores apoyos con respecto a los indicadores típicos de esta dimensión: formación, habilidades y competencias personales.
Por otro lado, las dimensiones en las que los participantes mostraron mayores dificultades fueron inclusión social, relaciones interpersonales y autodeterminación. En este sentido, los niños y adolescentes con TEA obtienen peores puntuaciones justo en aquellas dimensiones más sociales en comparación a sus pares sin discapacidad (Ikeda et al. 2014), lo que podría deberse no solo a las dificultades que presentan a la hora de relacionarse, sino también a que los programas de intervención podrían no estar ajustados a sus verdaderas necesidades (Walton & Ingersoll 2013) y que suelen estar más centrados en un enfoque rehabilitador de la discapacidad en detrimento de proporcionar los apoyos necesarios para favorecer su participación en la comunidad (Askari et al. 2015). Llama la atención que, a pesar de los años que el paradigma de apoyos lleva vigente en nuestro país, casi ninguno de los participantes del estudio participaba en la elaboración de su plan individual de apoyos (ítem perteneciente a autodeterminación). Se observaron también respuestas más negativas en los ítems relativos a fomentar su participación activa tanto en la toma de decisiones (e.g., sobre su plan individual de apoyos, su ropa o en la decoración de su habitación) como en grupos de su comunidad (e.g., scouts, deportes, sociales, educativos, religiosos). Asimismo, destacan las carencias en cuanto a la disponibilidad de apoyos y programas que les permitan conocer sus derechos o gestionar su dinero y que, por tanto, promuevan una mayor independencia funcional.
En este sentido, estamos de acuerdo con Soresi et al (2011, p.5) cuando señalan la necesidad de un “enfoque que promueva la inclusión social y la autodeterminación” y que éste “requiere que las personas sin discapacidad adquieran un rol activo a la hora de facilitar apoyos a las personas con discapacidad en las comunidades típicas, más allá de lo que puede lograrse mediante los sistemas de servicios sociales, de salud y discapacidad”. No obstante, es mucho aún el trabajo que las organizaciones proveedoras de servicios sociales y educativos pueden hacer para la mejora de estas tres dimensiones, especialmente implicar de forma activa a las personas en la elaboración de sus planes individuales de apoyos así como en grupos naturales de su comunidad, fomentar la toma de decisiones y la realización de elecciones, aumentar la disponibilidad de recursos que faciliten el contacto con sus seres queridos y las oportunidades para establecer amistades y relacionarse con ellas con normalidad.
Además de estudiar detenidamente los resultados personales relacionados con calidad de vida en los que la muestra presentaba mejores y peores resultados con el ánimo de proporcionar una guía a las organizaciones participantes para la mejora de los apoyos que proporcionan, en este estudio nos interesamos por la influencia de variables personales que podrían afectar a los resultados –pues como el propio modelo (Schalock & Verdugo 2002) y otros estudios señalan (Claes et al. 2012; Gómez et al. 2014), la calidad de vida se ve influenciada por factores personales y ambientales.
En relación al género, cabe destacar que la muestra estaba formada en su mayoría por varones (79.3 %), lo que coincide con la distribución esperada por sexo para las personas con TEA de una mujer por cada cuatro varones. En la misma línea que otros estudios (e.g., Kose et al. 2013; Kuhlthau et al. 2010) no se encontró relación entre esta variable y la calidad de vida en niños con TEA, si bien sí se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la dimensión de relaciones interpersonales a favor de los niños, lo que podría estar mediado por la mayor severidad del TEA en las niñas.
Respecto a la edad aunque no se dieron diferencias significativas en la puntuación total, sí se encontraron en la dimensión de inclusión social, en la que los participantes más pequeños (1-8 años) puntuaron significativamente mejor que los mayores (15- 21 años). Estos resultados concuerdan con anteriores estudios, en los que los padres de los niños con TEA de menor edad informan de mejores puntuaciones que los padres de los niños de mayor edad (Kuhlthau et al. 2010). Este hecho podría deberse a que a medida que aumenta la edad de estos niños han de enfrentarse a nuevos retos y cambios (e.g., ir al colegio, relacionarse con pares, establecer amistades, pasar de un nivel educativo a otro, cambiar de profesores etc.), lo que entraña una dificultad añadida en el caso de las personas con TEA, pero también a un descenso en la calidad de los servicios y apoyos proporcionados en estas áreas por parte de las organizaciones, pues en la etapa de 0-6 años los niños suelen estar atendidos por servicios de atención temprana mientras que en los últimos años pueden estar en diversos programas (e.g., transición a la vida adulta, educación especial, educación ordinaria, educación combinada) más especializados en el trabajo de otras áreas. Por tanto estos resultados sugieren la necesidad de conocer qué variables pueden influir en el descenso de las puntuaciones al aumentar la edad del niño con el fin de poner en marcha estrategias de intervención y servicios de apoyo que se ajusten a los diferentes niveles de edad y a las necesidades específicas que puedan aparecer durante la etapa de transición a la vida adulta (Chiang & Wineman 2014; Kuhlthau et al. 2010; van Heijst & Geurts 2015).
Por otro lado, observamos que los participantes de educación especial obtuvieron puntuaciones significativamente más bajas que aquellos cursando educación ordinaria o combinada, no solo en la puntuación de calidad de vida sino también en la mayor parte de las dimensiones (con la única excepción de bienestar físico y emocional) y en la mayor parte de los ítems. En este sentido, se ha comprobado que a diferencia de la educación inclusiva, que mejora la calidad de vida de niños y adolescentes con TEA (Morán et al. 2015), la institucionalización tiene un impacto negativo no solo en los resultados personales de CV, sino también en la calidad de los apoyos y servicios (Jenaro et al. 2013). Por ello, resulta fundamental no sólo fomentar la inclusión en las escuelas, sino también la puesta en marcha de todos los mecanismos y apoyos necesarios para que dicha inclusión educativa sea verdaderamente efectiva.
En cuanto al nivel de DI también se encontraron diferencias significativas en CV en favor de las personas con DI leve/moderada, lo que concuerda con los resultados hallados en estudios anteriores (Billstedt et al. 2011). Del mismo modo, observamos que aquellos con personas con necesidades de apoyo extensas obtuvieron peores resultados que aquellos con necesidades de apoyo limitadas e intermitentes, encontrándose diferencias en todas las dimensiones (a excepción de bienestar emocional y emocional) y en la mayor parte de los ítems. Todo ello sugiere que las personas con TEA y DI severa y profunda presentan otro tipo de necesidades que no pueden ser cubiertas por los programas diseñados para las personas con DI leve o moderada, por lo que es necesario desarrollar programas dirigidos a personas con discapacidades más significativas que se ajusten al nivel de funcionamiento de cada persona.
Por último, como era esperado, las puntuaciones fueron más bajas en el caso de los participantes con problemas de comportamiento que entre aquellos que no presentaban dichos problemas. Las mismas diferencias se dieron en inclusión social y, en este sentido Chuang et al. (2014) encontraron que los niños con TEA con problemas de comportamiento externalizantes obtenían peores puntuaciones en el funcionamiento social. A su vez, los problemas de comportamiento de estos niños y jóvenes contribuyen a aumentar el nivel de sobrecarga familiar y a reducir, por tanto, la participación de sus familiares en la comunidad. De este modo, parece esencial continuar con el desarrollo de pruebas específicas para mejorar el diagnóstico de la psicopatología y los problemas de conducta en personas con TEA (Matson & Cervantes 2014), así como mejorar el acceso y la disponibilidad de los programas dirigidos a intervenir sobre estos problemas de conducta, pues todo ello podría no sólo mejorar la CV de vida de estos niños sino también la de sus familias (Chiang & Wineman 2014; Kuhlthau, et al. 2013).
En cuanto a las implicaciones de este estudio, si bien hay varios instrumentos destinados a evaluar la calidad de vida de adultos con discapacidad intelectual, lo cierto es que la mayoría no poseen unas adecuadas propiedades psicométricas (Townsend-White, Pham & Vassos 2012) o no están basados en una teoría de CV bien articulada con suficientes evidencias de validez. Además, sólo un número limitado parece adecuado para evaluar a personas con discapacidades significativas (Verdugo et al. 2014). Asimismo aún no existe una escala específica que evalúe calidad de vida en niños y adolescentes con TEA (Billstedt, Gillberg & Gillberg 2011; van Heijst & Geurts 2015), por lo que este estudio constituye una primera aproximación a la comprensión y evaluación de su CV con el fin de guiar y proporcionar los servicios y apoyos necesarios para una vida de calidad. Además, este estudio responde a la demanda de las entidades que atienden a personas con discapacidad de contar con instrumentos con suficientes evidencias de validez y fiabilidad que les permitan llevar a cabo prácticas basadas en la evidencia y evaluar los avances y barreras relacionados con la CV de sus usuarios (Gómez et al. in press; Schalock et al. 2011).
En contraste, como toda investigación, este estudio no se encuentra exento de limitaciones. Entre ellas cabe destacar que la muestra de participantes no pudo ser seleccionada al azar sino que la participación dependió de la voluntad de cada centro contactado y, en cada centro, de las personas que los profesionales y familiares aceptaron evaluar. Por ello, es posible que exista, especialmente en el caso de las evaluaciones llevadas a cabo por profesionales, un marcado efecto de deseabilidad, si bien se insistió en todo momento a los evaluadores para que realizaran una evaluación ajustada a la realidad, pues el objetivo de la misma no era evaluar la calidad de los servicios sino obtener información fidedigna y útil para el desarrollo de planes individualizados de apoyo que ayudaran a mejorar la calidad de vida de los participantes. De hecho, el equipo de investigación se comprometió a devolver los resultados a cada entidad participante.
Otra de las limitaciones del estudio radica precisamente en que la evaluación de la calidad de vida sea realizada por una tercera persona a pesar de que diversas investigaciones encuentran un bajo nivel de acuerdo entre observadores externos y las propias personas con discapacidad, encontrando que las personas con discapacidad suelen obtener puntuaciones más altas cuando responden ellos mismos que cuando son evaluados por terceros. En este sentido, si bien se ha demostrado que los autoinformes son la mejor forma de evaluar la CV (Verdugo et al. 2014), las personas con TEA y discapacidades más significativas presentan dificultades de comunicación que ponen en riesgo la fiabilidad de los mismos (Finlay & Lyons 2002; Gómez et al. 2014; Ikeda, Hinckson & Krägeloh 2014; McGillivray et al. 2009), por lo que los informes de otras personas son necesarios como información complementaria e, incluso, pueden llegar a sustituir a los autoinformes cuando no es posible obtener directamente la información de la persona (Sheldrick et al. 2012). No obstante, los estudios futuros debieran centrar esfuerzos en el desarrollo de métodos que permitan obtener la percepción y opinión de las personas con dificultades de comunicación de manera fiable.
Los hallazgos de este estudio revelan la necesidad imperiosa de fomentar una educación verdaderamente inclusiva y desarrollar planificaciones individualizadas de apoyo que hagan especial hincapié en la mejora de las relaciones interpersonales, la inclusión social y la autodeterminación. Es imprescindible, por tanto, continuar con el estudio y análisis de las necesidades de los niños y jóvenes con TEA y sus familias, de modo que se puedan implementar prácticas basadas en la evidencia (Gómez et al. 2013; Schalock et al. 2011; van Loon et al. 2013) con el fin de mejorar su calidad de vida y, especialmente, la de aquellos con mayores necesidades de apoyos.
Translation - English Discussion
Quality of Life scores allow the development of performance standards and suggest strategies for improvement (Gómez et al. 2013). Thus, the main objective of this research was to produce a detailed analysis of individual results related to quality of life-related personal outcomes for children and adolescents with ASD. In our study, although the scores were above the theoretical mid-point of the scale and so might, in a very general way, be called positive, the results could be substantially improved with the provision of required support.
The most positive results were found in the dimensions domainsof material wellbeing, physical wellbeing, and personal development. A more detailed analysis of the items showed that the highest scored item, and therefore the one which Spanish service providers currently do best, is respecting the privacy of the participants (in the rights dimensiondomain). Similarly, the other high scoring items were those with family or professionals taking the main role: providing technical support and material resources, looking out for their rights, maintaining orderly documentation, and giving information about restraint measures.
In light of these results, we may conclude that the children and adolescents participating in this study who receive services and support in our country have their most basic needs, material and physical wellbeing, particularly well met. This is not surprising if we bear in mind that in recent years there has been a prevailing rehabilitative perspective whose main aims are satisfying basic needs (material wellbeing) and reducing the impact of disabilities (physical wellbeing). It is more surprising to find such positive results in the personal development dimension, as similar studies up to now, looking at adults with intellectual disabilities, have found that this is one of the dimensions domainswith the greatest limitations (Gómez 2010; Verdugo et al. 2010; Gómez et al. 2011). It may be that in this case, in contrast to those previous studies, because all of the participants are in the educational system, they are receiving more, and better support in terms of the typical indicators in this dimensiondomain imension: training, and personal skills.
In contrast, the dimensions domainswhere the participants demonstrated greater difficulties were social inclusion, interpersonal relationships, and self-determination. Children and adolescents with ASD had worse scores in these more social domainsimensions compared to their peers without disabilities (Ikeda et al. 2014). This might be due, not only to those difficulties which arise when it comes to interaction, but also to the fact that intervention programs may not be tailored to their real needs (Walton & Ingersoll 2013), but instead have a rehabilitative focus on the disability to the detriment of provision of support that would encourage participation in the community (Askariet al. 2015). It is notable that, despite many years in which the support paradigm has been prevalent in our country, almost none of the participants in the study participated in the creation of their individual scare upportplans (part of the self-determination dimensiondomain). More negative responses were also seen in items related to promoting active participation both when making decisions (e.g. relating to individual care supportplans, clothing, room decoration) and in community groups (e.g. scouts and sports, social, educational, or religious groups). Likewise, deficiencies stand out when it comes to the availability of support and programs which help them to understand their rights or to manage their own money and, as such, encourage better functional independence.
In this sense, we agree with Soresiet al (2011, p.5) when they signalled the need for a “focus which promotes social inclusion and self-determination” and which “requires that people without disability take on an active role when it comes to supporting people with disabilities in typical communities, beyond that which can be achieved through health, disability, or social services”. Nevertheless, there is still much work that providers of educational and social services can do to improve these three domainsimensions. In particular the active involvement of people in the creation of their individual care supportplans and in the natural groups in their community, encouraging them to take decisions and make choices, improving the availability of resources which facilitate contact with their loved ones and opportunities to make friends and interact with them normally.
Apart from closely examining individual QoL-related results personal outcomesfrom the sample for positives and negatives in order to provide guidance to service providers, we were also interested in the influence of individual variables which might affect the results, because, as our own model (Schalock & Verdugo 2002) and others (Claes et al. 2012; Gómez et al. 2014c) have shown, quality of life is influenced by individual and environmental factors.
In terms of gender, it is worth highlighting that the sample was made up mainly of boys (79.3 %) in line with the expected gender distribution of people with ASD of one woman for everyfour men. Similarly to other studies (e.g., Kuhlthauet al. 2010; Koseet al. 2013) no relationship was found between this variable and the quality of life in children with ASD, and while statistically significant differences were found in the interpersonal relationships dimension domainin favour of boys, that may be mediated by the greater severity of ASD in the girls.
Regarding age, although no significant differences were found in the overall scores, they were found in the social inclusion dimension, where the youngest participants (ages 1 to 8) scored significantly higher than the oldest (ages 15 to 21). These results are in accordance with previous studies, in which the parents of younger children with ASD reported higher scores than parents of older children (Kuhlthauet al.2010). This may be due to the fact that, as they get older, children have to face new challenges and changes (e.g. going to school, dealing with their peers, making friends, progressing through the school system, changing teachers) which present additional difficulties for people with ASD, but which may also entail a lower quality of care from the providers because, between 0-6 years old, children are usually treated by early care services whereas in the last few years of care they may be in various programs (e.g. transition to adult life, special education, ordinary education, combined education) which specialise in other areas. Because of that, these results suggest the need to understand which variables can influence the lowering of scores as children grow up with the aim of implementing intervention and support strategies which are tailored to different ages and the specific needs which may arise during the transition to adult life (Kuhlthauet al.2010; Chiang &Wineman 2014; van Heijst&Geurts 2015).
Additionally, we have seen that participants in special education scored significantly lower than those in ordinary or combined education, not only in the total quality of life score but also in the majority of dimensions domains(with the exception of physical and emotional wellbeing) and in most items. This has shown that, in contrast to inclusive education, which improves the quality of life of children and adolescents with ASD (Moránet al. 2015), institutionalisation has a negative impact, not only on the individual QoL resultsquality of life-related personal outcomes, but also on the quality of care and services (Jenaro et al. 2013). For that reason, it is essential not just to encourage inclusion in schools, but also to implement any mechanisms and support necessary for that inclusion to be truly effective.
The level of ID was also found to cause significant differences in QoL in favour of those with slight/moderate ID, which is in line with results from previous studies (Billstedtet al. 2011). Similarly, we saw that those with extensive support needs had worse results than those whose support needs were limited or intermittent, and that differences were observed in all dimensions domains(exceptpersonal development, physical and emotional wellbeing) and in most items. This suggests that people with ASD and severe or profound ID present other types of needs which cannot be met by programs designed for those with slight/moderate ID, which is why programs need to be developed that are aimed at people with more significant disabilities and that are tailored to each person’s level of functioning.
Lastly, as expected, scores were lower from participants with behavioural problems than those without. The differences appeared in social inclusion and, in this regard Chuang et al. (2014) found that children with ASD and externalisingbehavioural problems had worse scores in social functioning. In turn, the behavioural problems exhibited by these children and young people contribute to excessive burdens on families and so reduce family participation in the community (Sikoraet al. 2013). Therefore it seems vital to continue the development of specific tests to improve diagnosis of psychopathology and behavioural problems in people with ASD (Matson & Cervantes 2014), and so to improve their access to, and the availability of, programs aimed at intervening in these behavioural problems, as that would not only improve these children’s quality of life but also that of their families (Kuhlthau, et al. 2013; Chiang &Wineman 2014).
As for the implications of this research, while there are a variety of instruments to evaluate quality of life for adults with intellectual disability, the truth is that the majority of them do not have appropriate psychometric properties (Townsend-Whiteet al.2012) or are not based on a well articulated theory of QoL with sufficient evidence of validity. Furthermore, only a limited number of them seem adequate to evaluate people with significant intellectual disability (Verdugo et al. 2014). Likewise, there are no specific scales to evaluate quality of life in children and adolescents with ASD (Billstedtet al. 2011; van Heijst&Geurts 2015), and as such this research is a first approximation towards the understanding and evaluation of their QoL with the aim of guiding and providing services and support they need for a life of good quality. In addition, this research is a response to the demand from those that provide care support to people with disabilities for instruments with sufficient evidence of validity and reliability to allow them to use evidence-based practices and to evaluate improvements and obstacles related to their users’ QoL (Schalock et al. 2011; Gómez et al. in press).
This research, like all research, is not without its limitations. The sample of participants was not randomly selected, as participation was voluntary for each centre contacted, and for each person that the professionals and families agreed to evaluate. Therefore there may be a marked desirability bias although those carrying out the evaluations were urged to perform realistic evaluations as the object was not to evaluate the quality of services but rather to gather reliable, useful information for the development of individual support care plans which would help to improve participants’ quality of life. In fact the research team promised to return the results to each participating centre.
Another limitation of this research is that the quality of life evaluation was performed by a third person despite the fact that various research has found poor agreement between external observers and people with disabilities themselves, finding that people with disabilities usually score more highly when they themselves respond compared to a third-party evaluation. Although self-reporting has been demonstrated to be the best way to evaluate QoL (Verdugo et al. 2014), people with ASD and more significant disabilities present communication difficulties which put the reliability of those evaluations in doubt (Gómez et al. 2014a; Ikeda et al. 2014; Verdugo et al. 2014). For that reason reports from others are required as complementary information and they may even be used as substitutes for self-reporting when it is not posible to get information directly (Sheldrick et al. 2012). Nonetheless, future research should make efforts towards the development of methods which allow the perceptions and opinions of those with communication difficulties to be gathered reliably.
Our findings demonstrate the compelling need to encourage truly inclusive education, and to develop individualisedcare supportplans which especially emphasise the improvement of interpersonal relationships, social inclusion and self-determination. It is essential, therefore, to continue the study and analysis of the needs of children and young people with ASD and their families, so that evidence based practices may be implemented (Schalock et al. 2011; Gómez et al. 2013; van Loon et al. 2013) in order to improve their quality of life, especially those with greater support needs.

I have a degree in microbiology from the University of Leeds and worked for ten years in the water industry and the Public Health Laboratory Service in the UK. Following that I spent ten years in the pharmaceutical industry, first as the QC microbiologist and then as the Quality Assurance manager. I was responsible for the quality of all documentation, and reviewed and revised thousands of documents as part of upgrade projects to enter the US market. I moved to Spain in 2009 and started teaching English, doing occasional translations and proof-reading, and became a full-time freelance translator in 2015.
I offer individualised translation (Spanish to English) and proof-reading services for scientific and academic texts. I mainly deal with psychology articles, but have worked on articles in chemistry, law, geology, dentistry, archeology, and English literature.
