English to Russian: TESOL discipline problem analysis General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Problem: students don’t participate in classroom activities. Apparently, there are no disciplinary problems as it’s specified that they’re polite and respectful.
This problem can be dealt with in multiple directions, but it’s important to understand the reason why these university students don’t participate.
Some of these reasons may include:
- They major in a totally different discipline and the English class is not one of their priorities (low motivation).
- The class is too big and the instruction is mostly T-centered (class-grouping).
- The students are used to other teaching methods that might not imply oral communication in class (students’ background).
- The students can be simply bored because the material in not interesting (lesson content).
- Students are afraid of making mistakes in front of their peers (class atmosphere).
- Other
If these are some of the causes of the problem, we have to accept that some of them can’t be eliminated. For example, if the class is too big, it’s impossible to change the number of the participants, unless the administration interferes and divides the class. Or if the mandatory book is boring, it can’t be ignored by the teacher, unless, again, the administration doesn’t change the policy.
However, it’s possible to work on other possible causes of Mr. Li’s problem.
Firstly, much can be changed thanks to creating a good class atmosphere. In case the students are used to other instruction methods or are afraid of publicly making mistakes, establishing a positive and mistake-welcoming atmosphere can help those who have these problems (and not other).
Secondly, through effective grouping a big class can be divided productively every lesson. This would help us solve the problem of the T-centered instruction and give the opportunity (or force) to talk at least a little almost every student. Group activities can also serve as a remedy against the stress that students may feel having to speak and potentially make mistakes in public.
Translation - Russian

Source text - Italian LA DIVINA MARCHESA
Luisa Casati
Translation - Russian

Bio
I specialize in marketing content transcreation and software localization. Typically, these are websites, help center articles and UI. I have been collaborating for years with a top international localization agency and I fulfill the role of the Russian Language Lead on 3 accounts (software and apps that you use every day but that are under NDAs).
I create style guides, fill in Jira language quality reports and edit the translators' work in such tools as XTM, Memsource and some proprietary client's apps.
I earned a PhD in Applied Linguitics from Complutense University of Madrid. My specialization is cognitive strategies of comprehension. My knowledge of textual linguistics, semantics and human comprehension processes helps me to identify even quite well post-edited MT and improve its quality.
I'm interested in occupying the role of localization lead at an international company or Russian localization lead in order to introduce quality improvement processes. I received professional education in project management from ESIC (Spain) and have been working at startups for the last several years. Therefore, I'm well familiar with business management.
I also love transcreation because it operates on the semantic level and most translators are unable to abandon translation and dare to transcreate.
