이처럼 수요를 억제하는데도 오히려 성과는 좋아지는 메커니즘을 이용하는 마케팅 기법을 소위 ‘디마케팅 (Demarketing)’이라고 부른다. 디마케팅이란, 40여년전 필립 코틀러와 시드니 레비 교수가 1971년 하버드 비즈니스 리뷰에서 발표한 “Demarketing, Yes, Demarketing‟이라는 논문에서 처음 소개된 개념이다. 이 논문에서는 ‘전체 또는 특정 고객의 수요를 일시적 혹은 영구적으로 감퇴시키고자 하는 마케팅 활동’으로 정의하고 있는데 이는 단순히 고객의 수요를 줄이는 것을 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라 수요 감소를 통해 고객들에게 신뢰를 주고 내부적으로는 마케팅 자원을 효율적으로 투자할 수 있도록 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 디마케팅 전략은 이와 같은 많은 장점으로 점점 더 사용이 보편화되고 있다.
2011년 미국 뉴욕타임스 잡지에 매우 흥미있는 광고가 실렸다. “Don’t Buy This Jacket”. 이 광고는 글로벌 아웃도어 브랜드 파타고니아에서 당시 블랙프라이데이를 맞아 무분별한 소비와 낭비 문화를 비판하고자 필요 없는 재킷의 구매를 줄이자는 의미에서 내건 광고였다. 더 재미있는 것은 파타고니아에서 재킷을 사지 말아야 할 이유에 대해서도 함께 올렸기 때문인데, 이 점퍼를 만들기 위해 소비되는 135리터라는 물의 양, 20파운드의 탄소배출, 완성품의 2/3이나 되는 쓰레기를 제시하여 자사 제품이 환경에 얼마나 부정적 영향을 주고 있는지를 노골적으로 전달한다. 하지만 이 광고는 파타고니아가 환경을 생각하고 정직한 기업이라는 이미지를 심어주었고 실제 광고 이후 2년 동안 영업 실적이 40% 가량 상승하는 효과를 가져왔다.
이러한 디마케팅 전략과 친환경적인 기업 경영으로 끊임없은 성장을 거듭하고 ‘일하고 싶은100대 기업’에 들어있는 파타고니아의 전략 사례에 대해서 알아보자.

Such a marketing strategy with a mechanism which intentionally represses demands but at the same time promotes increased outcome is called “demarketing”. The word “demarketing” was first introduced about forty years ago, on a thesis paper “Demarketing, Yes, Demarketing” published by professor Philip Kotler and Sidney Levy on 1971 Harvard Business Review. On this paper, demarketing is defined as “a marketing activity designed to decrease demands of entire or certain groups of customers temporarily or permanently”. However, its purpose is not just to decrease demands. By decreasing the demands, it is possible to give more credibility to customers and internally, it will be possible to invest marketing resources more effectively. With such advantages, the uses of the demarketing strategy are becoming more general these days.
On the New York Times magazine in 2011, a very interesting advertisement was placed; “Don’t Buy This Jacket”. This advertisement was placed by a global outdoor brand Patagonia. Patagonia placed this advertisement to prevent customers from buying unnecessary jackets on Black Friday and to criticize thoughtless, wasteful consumptions. The more interesting thing was, Patagonia even placed reasons why customers should not buy jackets from Patagonia. To produce a single jacket, 135 litters of water is used, 20 pounds of carbon are produced, and wastes equivalent to two thirds of a finished jacket are produced. By listing all these negative sides of their jacket production Patagonia had bluntly delivered their negative effects on the environment to the public. Ironically, this advertisement had made customers to have very honest images on Patagonia and in the following two years, Patagonia’s sales were increased by forty percent.
With such demarketing strategies and eco-friendly managements, Patagonia was able to expand its business greatly and it was even placed in the list of the “100 best companies to work for”. Now, let us take a closer look on the examples of Patagonia’s strategies.
