Es con gusto que iniciamos esta propuesta de diálogo con la comunidad de usuarios de cómputo. A partir de la necesidad de tener un medio común para el imprescindible intercambio de información, pretendemos con esto generar y difundir ideas y prácticas acerca de la función de cómputo en la institución: como es y hacia donde se dirige. Entendemos que un medio como éste es una parte importante de la formación de una verdadera cultura computacional en las personas y por lo tanto en la institución. Escencial es la respuesta de todos ustedes, por lo tanto además de una presentación, ésto es también una invitación abierta, una invitación a participar, a escribir, a llamar, a decirnos no solo lo que quisieran ver publicado aquí, sino sobre todo a compartir sus propias ideas y experiencias acerca de esas extensiones de la mente llamadas computadoras y las nuevas sociedades que forman llamadas redes. De este modo ustedes tienen el poder de hacer cambios y modelar a su gusto esta publicación que deben sentir como suya. Es así, y solo así que este intento pueda rendir frutos.
VIVIENDO CON UNA COMPUTADORA
Lo que todo usuario de una micro debe saber para tener unaconvivencia feliz con su equipo
Tal vez sería una buena práctica que junto con la computadora que vamos a usar, nosentregaran un manual de los cuidados que se deben tener con ella y un registro de los mantenimientos que ha tenido y que debe tener. Si esto se hace con un automóvil ¿porqué no con una computadora?
Afortunadamente las computadoras que hoy usamos ya no son tan demandantes de cuidados especiales como lo eran sus antecesoras. Si así fuera todos necesitaríamos de un sitio especial con aire acondicionado, filtros, piso falso e instalación eléctrica especial.
En términos generales se puede decir que si un ambiente es adecuado para un ser humano, lo será también para una microcomputadora. Sin embargo como todavía hay diferencias, las computadoras requerirán que les demos algunos cuidados específicos; algunos de ellos se describen a continuación:
1. Protéjala del polvo. Tenga la seguridad de que una de las mejores inversiones que pueda usted hacer para prolongar la vida de su computadora, será el comprar unas fundas para cubrir monitor, teclado y chasis principal.
2. Protéjala de usted mismo. Es muy común que se derrame café o cenizas de cigarro en los teclados.Tal vez sea demasiado pedir, pero procure no compartir el café y el cigarro con su computadora.
3. No la exponga a los rayos solares. Esto evitará que su computadora adquiera un color amarillento (esto la hace perder valor de reventa) y que corra el peligro de sobrecalentarse.
4. Cuide la alimentación de su equipo. Es recomendable usar un contacto polarizado (de tres agujeros) con tierra física. Dependiendo de la calidad de la línea se puede tener un regulador, un acondicionador de línea o una fuente ininterrumpida de poder. En general no basta con tener un multicontactos! Además no conecte cafeteras, sacapuntas o aspiradoras al mismo circuito en donde está conectada la computadora.
5. Cuide sus discos. No los exponga al polvo, al calor. No los doble, ni escriba sobre elios, ni toque las partes expuestas. Evite exponerlos a campos magnéticos e insértelos con cuidado en la computadora.
6. Cuidado con los virus. Usar Software pirateado y juegos es un gran riesgo.
A parte de estos cuidados ¿qué servicios necesita una computadora? Cada tres meses aproximadamente necesita un mantenimiento preventivo que consiste en los siguiente:
a) Aspirado (o sopleteado) interior
b) Verificación, de las conexiones de tarjetas y cables
c) Limpieza de las cabezas de lectura y escritura de la unidad de disco flexible.
Si su computadora tiene un disco duro es importante dedicar tiempo a su administración; esto significa que hay que cuidar que la información que reside en este disco sea la que se emplea con mayor frecuencia y que esté organizada de una forma óptima. También deben tomarse precauciones para que esta información sea copiada a discos flexibles, para prevenir su eventual perdida en caso de ocurrir algún problema con el disco duro. Pero como para describir estas tareas hace falta conocer ciertas órdenes del sistema y estar familiarizado con algunos conceptos, pospondremos la exposición detallada de esta tarea para otro número del boletín.
A pesar de todos los cuidados que se puedan tener, en algún momento es posible que surjan problemas con la computadora. ¿Qué hacer en estos casos? Antes de llamar al experto, por favor dese un tiempo para ensayar algunas soluciones.
Si lo que falla es el monitor:
• Asegúrese de que tanto el monitor como la PC estén encendidos.
• Verifique que los cables de corriente estén conectados.
• Cerciórese de que hay corriente eléctrica en los enchufes.
• Mueva los controles de brillantez y contraste.
• Si es posible cambie el monitor para asegurarse de que es efectivamente el monitor el que falla y no la conexión con la PC
Si los problemas son con el teclado:
• Verifique que el cable esté bien conectado a la PC.
• Si el teclado tiene un switch abajo de él, asegúrese de que está en la posición correcta (XT o AT).
En caso de que la impresora sea la que no funcione correctamente:
• Asegúrese de que el interruptor esté en la posición de encendido.
• Verifique que haya papel.
• Cerciórece de que el indicador "ON LINE” esté prendido.
• Revise la conexión de los cables.
• Vea que la cubierta esté colocada correctamente.
Si ya verificó todas las posibles causas del problema y la falla persiste, entonces ahora sí llame al experto.
MITOS SOBRE LOS VIRUS
MITO 1. Los archivos de datos pueden transmitir virus.
Los virus dañan los archivos de datos, pero no los infectan. Sólo los archivos ejecutables (los que tienen extensiones EXE, COM, PRG, SYS y OVL) y los diskettes con el sector de boot infectados pueden transmitir un virus. Los virus necesitan un archivo donde puedan pasar inadvertidos y esto es difícil que suceda en los archivos de datos.
MITO 2. Los virus destruyen el hardware.
Hasta ahora no se conoce ningún virus que haya dañado físicamente un equipo, y las probabilidades de que lo puedan hacer son muy bajas.
MITO 3. Si la micro se infecta todos los datos se destruirán.
En la mayoría de los casos, si la infección es detectada a tiempo se puede evitar que el daño se propague y aún recuperar mucha información.
MITO 4. Si se tiene un virus, los respaldos no serán de ninguna utilidad.
Los respaldos son útiles para recuperar los archivos de datos dañados y los archivos que no se infectaron cuando se hizo el respaldo.
MITO 5. Los virus pueden infectar los discos protegidos contra escritura.
La mejor protección contra un virus es proteger los diskettes contra escritura.
QUE HACER EN CASO DE INFECCION
1. Apagar la PC.
2. Encender la computadora usando un diskette con sistema operativo, de preferenciael original
3. Revisar el disco duro con un programa detector de virus.
4. Remover los virus encontrados.
5. Revisar el disco duro nuevamente.
6. Revisar los diskettes que se hayan usado.
7. Intentar aislar la fuente de donde provino el virus.
TECNOFOBIA
Así, con esa palabra, el gran Isaac Asimov titula uno de los artículos reunidos en el tomo La mente errabunda (Alianza Editorial, el libro de bolsillo 1282): tecnofobia, que quiere decir por supuesto rechazo u odio a los avances técnicos, a la tecnología en general y en especial a la que creemos que nos afectará de manera negativa. El grado cero óe la tecnofobia es el de aquel que se ufana diciendo: "la máquina más complicada que hay en mi casa son unas tijeras toledanas", lo cual es redondamente falso, porque lo puede decir, por ejemplo, en una conversación telefónica. Asimov confiesa que él mismo, increíblemente pues es un científico consumado, autor de narraciones de ciencia-ficción y defensor apasionado de la técnica al servicio de la humanidad, ha padecido de tecnofobia; le ha sucedido cuando tuvo que enfrentarse, como escritor, a un procesador de palabras. En su caso de escritor, entendió perfectamente en qué consistía su tecnofobia: era simple y llanamente "miedo a la reeducación". Cuando uno, escritor adulto, ha pasado lustros y décadas ante su máquina "mecánica", siente o piensa que tendrá que olvidar o desechar todo lo aprendido penosamente ante su fiel teclado cuando se enfrenta a una máquina de escribir electrónica o, más "grave" todavía, a un procesador de palabras. La tecnofobia consiste, entonces, en el temor de empezar desde cero a aprender toda una nueva técnica. Da pena, pues, tratándose de adultos que se ponen nerviosos ante la posibilidad de hacer el ridículo. Nada más y también nada menos. Una situación de zozobra psicológica: tal es la tecnofobia en su versión de "miedo a la reeducación". Cuando leía ese articulo de Asimov tuve dos sensaciones simultáneas: el agrado de leer algo que parecía escrito especialmente para mi, pues yo mismo tengo hace algunos meses una máquina electrónica y no acabo de "animarme" a utilizarla con plenitud; y el alivio de que me explicaran con sensatez lo que me sucedía en medio de ese desánimo. Yo padecía de la misma tecnofobia que Asimov describía, poniéndose él mismo de ejemplo. Lo cierto es que un avance en la técnica facilita las cosas para eso se ha concebido, diseñado y ejecutado, lo cual no es difícil entender. Lo difícil es animarse, sin nerviosismo, a aprender algo nuevo en la edad adulta; algo, como en este caso, decisivo desde el punto de vista profesional. Conozco innumerables redactores que no sólo se niegan a "entrarle" a los avances en las máquinas de escribir, sino que expresan su repudio escandalizado a esos logros técnicos. Después de leer esas páginas de Isaac Asimov he tenido que revisar mis propias ideas y opiniones respecto de la técnica y sus adelantos. Lo bueno con escritores como Aslmov es que han perfeccionado un estilo literario que conjuga brillantemente la afabilidad, la inteligibilidad y la accesibilidad en temas que por tradición pasan por muy complicados. El tono conversacional se alia, en su caso como en el caso de Carl Sagan o Jacob Bronowsky, con la seguridad y la documentación en el manejo de información científica y técnica no siempre sencilla. Son los paladines del sentido común y los enemigos del árido "latín" de los científicos y los tecnócratas que no se ocupan de la mayoría de la gente, usted y yo, junto a quienes se ponen, con una sonrisa en los labios, Asimov, Sagan, Bronowsky y otros divulgadores de la ciencia que son, también, consumados escritores. Sus textos nos ayudan a comprender de veras el mundo moderno, en el cual nos es posible ya evitar el contacto con la ciencia y la técnica en sus diversas manifestaciones.

Through these means, we are glad to propose the computer users community a dialogue. As a result of the need there is for an exchange of experience and information, we are looking for the creation and divulging of ideas and practices about the handling of computer equipment within this institution. Since that is our goal, we understand this as an important part of information, a true computers culture for personnel, and therefore, for the institutions. It is thus, very important but also to share your ideas and experiences with those mind extensions called computers and the new societies called networks. Through these means you shall be able to change or give this publication the model you like, in a manner you will feel it is yours. It this way, and only through this way this attempt could be fruitful.
LIVING WITH A COMPUTER
What every PC user should know to ensure a peaceful coexistence with his/her machine
It would be a good idea if, upon buying a computer, we were given a manual on its care, a log for recording maintenance dates and suggestions on possible future needs. If we do this for cars, why not for computers?
Fortunately, today’s computers no longer need the special care their predecessors required. If they did, we would have to put them in special air-conditioned rooms equipped with filters, a false floor, and special electrical installations.
In general, if an environment is good for people, it's also good for a computer. Nonetheless, there are still some basic differences between us, and computers require specific care, as described in the following.
1. Protect your PC from dust. One of the best investments you can make to prolong the life of your computer is to buy protective covers for the monitor, keyboard, and main body.
2. Protect it from yourself. Spilling coffee or cigarette ashes on the keyboard is very common. Perhaps it’s too much to ask, but try not to share coffee and cigarettes with your computer.
3. Do not expose your PC to direct sunlight. This will keep it from yellowing (which lowers its resale value) and overheat.
4. Pay special attention to the power source. We recommend you use a physically grounded, polarized, three-pronged outlet. Depending on the quality of the power source, you might need a regulator, a power conditioner or an uninterrupted power supply. A simple surge protector is generally not enough. Appliances such as coffee makers, pencil sharpeners, or vacuum cleaners should not be plugged into the same outlet as the computer.
S.Take care of your diskettes. Protect them from dust and heat. Don’t bend them, write on them, or touch their magnetic parts.
Avoid placing them near magnetic fields and be careful when inserting them into the computer
6. Beware of viruses. Pirated software or games are very risky.
Apart from the above, what servicing does a PC need?
We recommend the following preventive maintenance about every three months:
a) Vacuum (or blow-clean) the inside
b) Check card and cable connections
c) Clean the reading and writing heads of the floppy disk drive.
If your PC has a hard disk, it is important to dedicate some time to manage it. For instance, only the most frequently used information should be kept on the hard disk, and It should be organized in the best possible way. Information should be copied onto floppy disks to keep from losing it when there Is trouble with the hard disk. To do this, you need to know certain DOS commands and some basic concepts, which will be included in a later issue of this bulletin.
Despite all these precautions, you could have trouble with your PC at any time. If that happens, what should you do? Before calling an expert, we suggest you try the following:
If the monitor doesn’t work:
• Make sure both the monitor and the PC are on.
• Check that all electrical cords are plugged in.
• Make sure the power has not been cut off.
• Try the contrast and brightness controls.
• If possible, change the monitor to another machine to make sure it is the source of the problem, not its connection to the computer.
If there are problems with the keyboard:
• Make sure its connecting cable is plugged into the PC.
• If the keyboard has a switch on its underside, make sure it is in the correct position (XT or AT).
If the printer doesn’t work properly.
• Make sure it's turned on.
• Check that it has paper.
• Make sure the "ON LINE" light is on.
• Check the cable connections.
• Make sure the cover is on properly
If the problem has not gone away after you’ve checked all possible causes, you should call an expert.
MYTHS ABOUT VIRUSES
MYTH 1, Data files can transmita virus.
Viruses damage data files, but do not infect them. Only executable files (those with EXE, COM, PRG, SYS and OVL extensions) and diskettes with an infected boot sector can transmit a virus. Viruses need a file to hide in, and this is difficult in a data file.
MYTH 2. Viruses may damage the hardware.
Up to now, no viruses have been known to physically damage any hardware, and the likelihood of this happening is very low
MYTH 3. If a PC is infected, all data will be lost.

MYTH 4. If your PC has a virus, backups are of no use
Backups may be used to recover damaged data files and files that were not infected when the backups was made.
MYTH 5. Viruses can infect write-protected diskettes.
The best protection against a virus is to write-protect your diskettes.
WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF INFECTION
1. Turn off the PC.
2. Turn it back on using a diskette containing an operating system, preferably the original.
3. Check the hard disk using a virus detecting program.
4. Remove'all detected viruses.
5. Check the hard disk again.
6. Check all diskettes that were used on the PC.
7. Try to pinpoint the sources of the virus.
TECHNOPHOBIA
The great Isaac Asimov chose this word as the title of an article included in his book The Wandering Mind (published in Spanish by Alianza Editorial as La mente errabunda. paperback 1282). Technophobia, of course, means rejection or hatred of technical advances and of technology in general, especially any that we perceive will have a negative effect on us. People afflicted with the purest form of technophobia are those who boast, "The most complicated machine I have at home is a pair of scissors," which is probably untrue, since they may be saying this over the telephone. Asimov himself admits incredibly, given he is an expert scientist, science fiction writer, and ardent defender of technology in the service of humanity that when he first faced a word processor, he too was stricken by technophobia. As a writer, he understood exactly what his technophobia was: plain and simple "fear of retraining." When a writer has spent years or even decades in front of a "mechanical" typewriter, he fears that if he had to learn to use an electronic typewriter, or even worse, a word processor, he’d have to forget everything he so laboriously learned while sitting in front of his faithful keyboard. Technophobia, therefore, is being afraid to learn an entirely new technology from scratch. It’s embarrassing because this is an adult getting nervous about the possibility of feeling ridiculous. Nothing more and nothing less. A situation of psychological anxiety: that's what technophobia is when it takes the form of "fear of retraining." As I read Asimov’s article, I experienced two feelings at the same time: pleasure at reading something that seemed written especially for me, since I’d had a word processor computer for several months and couldn't bring myself to make full use of it; and relief at reading a rational explanation of the discouragement I felt. I was suffering from the very technophobia Asimov described in himself. It’s true that technology is meant to make things easier that’s why it is conceived, designed, and developed and this isn’t hard to understand. What is hard is for an adult not to get nervous about learning something new, even though, as in this case, it may be essential from a professional standpoint. I know many writers who not only refuse to use more advanced typewriters, but also express outrage at any technological progress. After reading the Asimov article, I felt obliged to reconsider my own ideas and opinions regarding the advances of modern technology. The good thing about such writers as Asimov is they have brilliantly perfected a friendly, understandable, and accessible literary style for dealing with subjects traditionally regarded as highly complex. For example, Carl Sagan and Jacob Bronowsky employ a conversational tone in seif confidently and knowledgeably presenting often complex scientific and technical information. They are champions of common sense and opposed to the dry "Latin" used by scientists and technocrats who don’t worry about the majority of people, like you and me; on the contrary, Asimov, Sagan, Bronowsky, and other highly skilled writers and disseminators of science make this information readily accessible to us. Their writing helps us to truly understand the modem world, in which it’s no longer possible to avoid the varied manifestations of science and technology.
