The Department of Nocturnal Affairs (D.N.A.) is a collaborative project by the artists Caroline Maxwell and Tal Yizrael. It exists as a ficticious office that collects stories and reports from the public about nocturnal wildlife sightings around their cities and landscapes.
Liat Grayver and the e-David Project
The e-David painting robot is the focal point of a collaboration between the artist Liat Grayver and the research team headed by Oliver Deussen at the University of Konstanz. The act of painting is disassembled and deconstructed before being translated into the realm of digital creation, where it is executed by the e-David. Together they are exploring new methods of implementing paint, using computers to generate an image and to create new ways of pursuing the application of aesthetics in painting. Their collaborative work tackles relevant contemporary questions regarding artificial intelligence, machine learning and its use in the artistic domain.

The e-David painting robot is the focal point of a collaboration between the artist Liat Grayver and the research team headed by Oliver Deussen at the University of Konstanz (Germany). The act of painting is disassembled and deconstructed before being translated into the realm of digital creation, where it is executed by the e-David.
Digital image-making, as much as traditional print- and paint-based image-making, has greatly influenced the conceptual understanding of the painterly process in historical and contemporary practices. Stimulated by the experience and by the exchange between informatics and the robotic world, Grayver found herself compelled to challenge and reconceptualize the foundations of painterly practice, starting with the bodily movement of the single brushstroke all the way to questions concerning control and loss of control in the creative process.
The interdisciplinary working platform shared by a computer scientist and a painter provoked a large range of questions regarding the use of robotics in the creative process of painting. How, for example, does one incorporate the use of computers and machines in the very intuitive and gestural practice of making a painting? This project deconstructs the act of making a mark into a body movement (machine), logical decisions (computer) and emotional intent (the artist).

The project’s realization, though, is hampered by the imperfection of modern technology. Artistic Pollination is a utopia existing in the artist’s imagination and fleshed out in his graphic art and objects. The project’s realization, though, is hampered by the imperfection of modern technology. At this stage, in collaboration with a scientist, the project sets out to describe the impossible conditions under which it could be realized.
The concept of Stylized Plants is a development of the Stylized Parks (the Russian version of French Formal Gardens) concept. Such parks symbolize the power of humans over nature and exist mainly for the aesthetic pleasure of the onlooker. Stylized Plants are essentially the topiary of the future. Continuing the traditions of styling, plants have a geometrically defined shape with expressed symmetry. However, unlike stylized parks, stylized plants do not necessarily form groups; they usually stand on their own. Stylized parks flourished during the epoch of absolutism, when Louis XIV said: “I am the state.” Stylized plants, however, flourish during epochs of equality, when everyone can say: “The state is me.” This is why stylized plants are accessible and easy to grow — one simply needs to have intellect and to avoid slave labor.
Stylized plants are created by pollinating a wild plant with modified pollen. The pollen contains a growth program for future generations of the plant.
