SHOCK
NOTE: Tailoring is essential. Select methods, procedures, and parameter levels based on the tailoring process described in Part One, paragraph 4, and Appendix C. Apply the general guidelines for laboratory test methods
described in Part One, paragraph 5 of this standard.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Purpose.
Shock tests are performed to:
a. provide a degree of confidence that materiel can physically and functionally withstand the relatively infrequent, non-repetitive shocks encountered in handling, transportation, and service environments.
This may include an assessment of the overall materiel system integrity for safety purposes in any one or all of the handling, transportation, and service environments;
b. determine the materiel's fragility level, in order that packaging may be designed to protect the materiel's physical and functional integrity; and
c. test the strength of devices that attach materiel to platforms that can crash.
1.2 Application.
Use this method to evaluate the physical and functional performance of materiel likely to be exposed to mechanically induced shocks in its lifetime. Such mechanical shock environments are generally limited to a frequency range not to exceed 10,000 Hz and a time duration of not more than 1.0 second. (In most cases of mechanical shock the significant materiel response frequencies will not exceed 2,000 Hz and the duration of materiel response will not exceed 0.1 second.) The materiel response to the mechanical shock environment will, in general, be highly
oscillatory, of short duration, and have a substantial initial rise time with large positive and negative peak amplitudes of about the same order of magnitude.1 The peak responses of materiel to mechanical shock will, in general, be enveloped by a decreasing form of exponential function in time. In general, mechanical shock applied to a complex multi-modal materiel system will cause the materiel to respond to (1) forced frequencies imposed on the materiel
from the external excitation environment, and (2) the materiel's resonant natural frequencies either during or after application of the excitation. Such response may cause:
a. materiel failure as a result of increased or decreased friction between parts, or general interference between parts;
b. changes in materiel dielectric strength, loss of insulation resistance, variations in magnetic and electrostatic field strength;
c. materiel electronic circuit card malfunction, electronic circuit card damage, and electronic connector failure. (On occasion, circuit card contaminants having the potential to cause short circuit may be dislodged under materiel response to shock.);
d. permanent mechanical deformation of the materiel as a result of overstress of materiel structural and nonstructural members;
e. collapse of mechanical elements of the materiel as a result of the ultimate strength of the component being exceeded;

with substantial area under the acceleration response curve.
f. accelerated fatiguing of materials (low cycle fatigue);
g. potential piezoelectric activity of materials, and
h. materiel failure as a result of cracks in fracturing crystals, ceramics, epoxies, or glass envelopes.

Les essais de choc ont pour but :

b. déterminez le seuil de fragilité du matériel de telle sorte que l’emballage puisse être conçu pour protéger l’intégrité fonctionnelle et physique du matériel ; et
c. Vérifiez en procédant à des essais la résistance des fixations du matériel sur les zones d’installation susceptibles de se rompre.
1.2 Critères d’application
Choisissez cette méthode afin d’évaluer les performances physique et fonctionnelle du matériel susceptibles de subir des chocs mécaniques au cours de sa vie. En règle générale, ces types d’environnements conçus pour les chocs mécaniques se limitent à une gamme de fréquences qui ne dépassent pas 10000 Hz et à une durée n’excédant pas 1,0 seconde. (Dans la plupart des cas, s’agissant des chocs mécaniques, les fréquences significatives de réponse du matériel ne dépasseront pas 2000 Hz et la durée de réponse du matériel ne sera pas supérieure à 0,1 seconde). La réponse du matériel aux chocs mécaniques sera, en général, fortement oscillatoire (régime peu amorti), d’une durée courte, et fera l’objet d’un temps de montée initial important accompagné d’amplitudes de crête positives et négatives importantes avec une amplitude à peu près du même du même ordre . Les réponses en valeurs crêtes du matériel aux chocs seront en général enveloppées par une fonction exponentielle décroissante dans le temps. Habituellement, les chocs mécaniques s’appliquent à un système matériel multimodal complexe à partir duquel le matériel répondra aux fréquences forcées imposées au matériel à partir d’un environnement d’excitation externe et à des fréquences propres de résonances du matériel aussi bien pendant qu’après avoir appliqué l’excitation. Ces types de réponses peuvent être à l’origine de :
a. défaut de matériel, résultat d’une friction réduite ou accrue entre des composants ou une interférence générale entre les composants ;
b. de modifications au niveau de la puissance diélectrique du matériel, perte de la résistance d’isolation, variations au niveau des forces magnétiques et du champ électrostatique ;
c. dysfonctionnement de carte de circuit électronique du matériel, carte de circuit électronique défectueuse, et défaut du connecteur électronique. (Á l’occasion, des contaminants de carte de circuit pouvant causer un court circuit peuvent être délogés pendant la réponse du matériel aux chocs.) ;
d. déformation mécanique permanente du matériel, résultant d’un surplus de contrainte des composants structurels et non structurels du matériel ;
e. rupture des éléments mécaniques du matériel suite au dépassement de la résistance mécanique maximale subie par le composant
f. fatigue plus rapide des matériels (fatigue oligocyclique),
g. activité piézo-électrique potentielle des matériels, et
h. défaut de matériel résultant de fissures de cristaux, de céramiques, d’époxy ou d’enveloppes de verre fracturés.
