Een veel gebruikte definitie is afkomstig uit het Brundtland-rapport uit 1987: “een duurzame ontwikkeling voorziet in de behoeften van het heden, zonder de behoeften van de toekomstige generaties in gevaar te brengen.” In de beleggingspraktijk betekent dit dat wordt belegd in ondernemingen die “sociaal en milieuverantwoord” handelen. Dit zijn bedrijven die positief scoren op verschillende duurzaamheidscriteria, zoals mensenrechten, kinderarbeid, milieubeleid, bestrijdingsmiddelen, broeikasgassen of watervervuiling. Duurzaamheid is echter een rekbaar begrip. Want wat is ‘sociaal-ethisch’, wat is ‘milieuverantwoord’? Wat is precies ‘duurzaam’? Meningen over deze begrippen lopen per land, zelfs per individu uiteen. Bovendien verschuiven deze in de loop van de tijd.

Sustainability, however, is a broad concept, because what is ‘social-ethical’, what is ‘environmentally responsible’? What exactly is ‘sustainable’? Opinions about these concepts vary widely in each country and even per person. In addition, these interpretations change in the course of time.
