I consider participating a charity helps my mind lifted as a human being.
But not this particular one.
I hope ProZ came up with this kind of good deed without Justin's misfortune.
My heart is on the disadvantaged children of the thrid world, in particular innocent lives such as whose limbs are blown up by landmines.
Of course list for good causes is limitless. My money isn't.

You've prompted me into contributing. However, I never came into contact with Justin and many other members may not have contributed for this reason.
The proposed use of the fund is my reason for putting my hand in my pocket. Most mature professions operate funds for this or similar purposes and, for me, it is one small way of saying thank you for being able to practise a job I love (largely due to this site) and making it possible for someone else to do so.

In a recent post on ProZ.com forums, a colleague said " All other prices have gone up".
Proz.com's staff has an option to increase the fees of membership then announce "A X percent of your bill will go to Justin Scholarship", yes?
There is not a minimum for donation.
- If someone consider not to buy x item today and donate, it won't cause a real imbalance in the family's budget.

How many parents dream for their children to earn / to be eligible for a scholarship?
- Donating is a psychologist and sharing is a source of satisfaction for many.
I think this question is pretty smart; there "was" a relatively high percentage who never heard of it and now they do.

I'm sure this is a worthy cause, but I'm a native of a so-called developing country and there are even worthier causes right in front of my door.

No. Who would decide the criteria for that "promising youth" interested in learning a new language and culture? Or let the translator and interpreter institutes do the selection? Besides the E.U. has such a programma for a promising translator (do not know the name of that programme)/interpreter (EMCI) and gives grants to those who match their criteria.
A promising youth can work to pay for his/her studies.

Charities are, in my humble opinion, generally a different way of saying your government doesn't do enough for the people the charity is aimed at. With that in mind I very rarely give to charity. Also, whenever I decide to give something to a charity (I did make a donation for the tsunami-victims as I felt that instant financial help was more important to start blaming governments for not having an adequate disaster help plan)I am asked for my name and contact details only to receive mindbogglin... As if my one-off spur of the moment action warrants a continuous unsolicited stream of begging demands for cash. Unfortunately, the larger charity organisations are the most guilty ones in this respect. In The Netherlands (where I lived) as well as in France (where I currently live) charities phone you at the most inconvenient times to ask for donations; such intrusions do not sway me at all towards thinking favourably of their charity.
I also see a lot of charity as buying of your bad conscience. By displaying a clear charitative policy companies and individuals are consciously or unconsciously paying to show they are humane. If this is unconsciously there is nothing wrong with that other than the need to reconsider the policy. If this is done consciously I wouldn't call that charity, as such behaviour is more calculating than charitative.
Sorry if I offended anybody, it was certainly not my objective, but the above should provide ample material for discussion.

I prefer to give my money to the all too many needy people right here on my doorstep. Sorry, you can never have too many scholarships, but what would be the selection criteria?
