Timely payments. I have two long-standing regular non-academic (and non-agency) clients. One pays me promptly at the end of each month. The other one, a smaller company, tends to pay me "when they can". For example, they still owe me over €1000 for work done in December. There is no point in me hassling them, I know from experience that they will pay me when it suits them, even though it might be not until the next time they want me to do some work for them.

I've voted fair rates because I feel that voting for clear communication wouldn't cover what I mean. Normal, fairly swift and helpful communication is also important but what I mean is that I hate to keep guessing about the nature of the subject. The field of expertise is often vital but some agencies don't let me know. Worse, sometimes the clients of the agencies don't clearly communicate it to them, either. In such cases letting me see at least a part of the original would do a lot of good.
