I see it as a challenge to improve my business and as an ally to supersede competition. In my opinion it's a very useful tool once you've figured out how to use it properly.

Ethically, I'm opposed to AI because of its impact on jobs and people's ability to think. But I admit, I use AI-generated Google search results all the time.

AI will - eventually - threaten our profession. However, when this will have a severe impact on our profession it shall be time for me to move on, that is, leave the working life.
As it stands right now, I would still not recommend to younger people to become a translator.

In the grand scheme of things, I sense that the eventual demise of translation as a worthwhile profession, as a consequence of the arrival of AI, comes fairly low on the 'risk to humanity' list.
I am more concerned, for example, about the use of AI by narcissistic paeodophiles and other AI-enabled predators coming for the youngest amongst us.

Maybe the poll's author thinks that generative AI has an inescapable role in everybody's life. Not in mine. How presumptuous!
While interacting with some form of this misshapen technology is unavoidable under limited circumstances (this generation's telephone menu, I suppose), I give AI zero involvement in my life.
And so can you.

One of the clients I have worked for since 2010 switched to AI last year and as a result my income went down by 25%. It's been going on for a while.

Besides, technology has never scared me; any tool is an assistant, and AI is no different.
The question is how to use it correctly without harming work and people.
Now, what I have unfortunately noticed recently is that, after using this platform for years and being a translator since 1997, someone insinuated/questioned that what I write here are answers given by some AI agent.
It is sad that a supposed colleague whom I do not know and who does not know me at all (and I say “supposed” because anyone who insults my intelligence and questions my professionalism in public does not deserve to be called a “colleague”) comes to a platform to make these kinds of comments and insinuations. That is pure and simple malice!
I don’t need to justify myself to someone hiding behind a screen.
In any case, I have never written here using AI agents. And even if I had, I wouldn’t be harming anyone or violating any rules or laws; many people use AI in their work.
That said, I still have my own mind and can think and write for myself.
It is for this reason and many others, including technical issues with the site, that I will not be renewing my Proz subscription tomorrow, and my visits as a user/member will not be the same.
Over the past few years, problems on this platform have increased, but nothing is worse than a lack of respect.
It’s frustrating when AI becomes an excuse for people to question others’ authenticity without evidence.
Fortunately, there are other places where empathy, respect, and professionalism are valued, both in virtual and real environments.
I wish all my colleagues and Proz all the best!

I expressed similar thoughts to a friend and colleague in Córdoba, Argentina, who also teaches translation courses at the national university there.
Even before the highfalutin and marketing-enabled arrival of generative AI (which is an oxymoron, if we stop to analyze the expression), I knew that translation students would do well in pursuing a twin career or profession—medicine, astrophysics, mathematics, architecture, etc.—to be able to enrich their professional life.

By way of comparison: I worked as a translator nested with a team of technical writers, two of them had pursued Ph.D degrees (Education or Biology, I think). Many of them arrived at the technical writing profession from other professions: teachers, academic writing, academia, etc. None of them (let me emphasize, none of them) had ever taken a course in technical writing and you could tell it by reading their output: missing period in paragraphs, too-liberal use of parentheses and other artifacts.
Where am I going with this? current translation students will have a harder time in establishing a career in translation but they will benefit from the academic learning they're getting now, even if they migrate to other professions. Those of us who remain and are able to work as translators full time (I'm counting my blessings) can do so because our clients and employers can tell the difference between a highly trained linguist/translator and a hack.
May we still remain connected through it all.

Fight for cleaning jobs, perhaps (if they are lucky not to be dragged into any wars, that is)? I don't see those being threatened by fake intelligence in any way. Quick, let's get in the business right now before competition gets fierce because it is THE FUTURE! Just accept and embrace it!
