The way I work now is not different from 5 years ago. Obviously it has changed a lot since I started translating over 40 years ago...

Very different Apr 6

Five years ago, I had a full-time, in-house job as a translator. Now I'm unemployed.

Of course Apr 6

Five years ago, I charged twice as much and I was busier than today.

Project managers used to exchange emails with you and be there for you. Now everything is aUtOmAtEd for no good reason, everything seems to be a cog in a wheel or a segment in a 'pipeline' of LangOps and other idiotic notions.

Come on, Gen Z, do your thing, I count on you:

- The return to the analog world is officially one of 2026’s biggest trends
- Gen Z’s enthusiasm for all things touchable is resurrecting the analog economy—and costing parents
- Why Generation Z Prefers Print Books

The kids are alright. They really are.

I stopped to pursuit my bachelor degree in biological sciences, and I started to teach languages and do translation. if this is not working different, I do not know what it is, haha.

well Apr 7

I don't think there is much difference in just 5 years. In 10 years i noticed there are more asian scammers and those offering you .01 rate and/or waste your time. Most of serious and reliable buiseness is going on behind the scenes and it was established years ago.

Not the way I work, but the way work has evolved Apr 8

The way I work hasn’t really changed, but the market has evolved in a way that pushes experienced translators aside, as companies prefer hiring cheaper, newer translators they can pay next to nothing.
It seems that being 51 years old automatically makes you “old” and supposedly less open to technology.
The irony is that I’ve always been interested in technology!

The irony is that I’ve always been interested in technology!
Even back in secondary school, when things were still very underdeveloped in that area, I was already experimenting with it.
And over the years I’ve continued to invest in my technical training, including CAT tools and subtitling. For what? For nothing.
On the other hand, nowadays a translator is expected to be good at any language.
That was the reply I got yesterday: “I thought you were good at Spanish.”
And we’re also expected to multitask, doing everything from voice recording to… cleaning up the mess left by AI-generated texts that are often of poor quality, but that’s not even the main issue.
