Yes, a few times Apr 26

My hospital’s appointment scheduling service is now handled by an AI agent, with terrible results. What used to take just a minute or two now takes much longer because I have to repeat everything, and sometimes the “agent” doesn’t understand me. On top of that, every now and then I get a text message saying my appointment has been canceled, and about half an hour later another text saying it’s confirmed! AI was supposed to make things better, wasn’t it?

In the beginning of AI craze, while I was still considering and taking/doing some AI projects, in one of the assigments we were supposed to interact with spoken AI agent through a microphone. I got a contract and terms in advance and one of the clauses said, under cons - interacting with AI agent causes extreme fatigue, headache and cognitive load, and boy were they right. I would never do it again, not even for $1k/hr.

Some results (an excerpt) from Google:

"AI brain fry" is a real form of mental fatigue caused by intensive interaction with, and monitoring of, AI tools, leading to cognitive overload, headaches, and reduced productivity. It stems from the high mental effort required to prompt, evaluate, and fix hallucinations from multiple, non-deterministic systems.

Why AI Causes Fatigue
AI Brain Fry: A Harvard Business Review study describes this as mental exhaustion from over-monitoring AI tools, causing headaches and poor concentration.
High-Stakes Oversight: Unlike passive tools, AI requires constant, active supervision to ensure quality, which consumes significant cognitive resources

As soon as I realise there is AI on the other end, I hang up.

I have. Several times, Apr 26

and not exactly recently (that was before the pandemic, and not seconds, but minutes). It seems they have a long, long way to go before they reach what any consumer would think is satisfactory. But, ... I don't seem to understand the point of the poll question...Sorry about that!

I just repeat, "I want to speak to a human being," over and over again, until I get one.

I suppose that may take more than 20 seconds.

An idea: record that in an audio file and play it on autorepeat!

Yes Apr 29

Yes, made it about 20 seconds into the robot monologue before I politely asked to be transferred to a human with feelings and a heart.

Yes!! And intersperse the repeats with pleasant music clips selected from my own collection.
