I work mostly with repeat customers and I haven't increased my rates for them for some time, with one exception: a direct client who asks me for EN, FR and ES translations. I only changed the ES/PT rate (the lowest) but left the others as they were (already on the higher side).

For new clients what I charge for a job is mainly project-based: subject matter, complexity, volume, urgency, source language of the text, type of service (some clients ask for ‘ready-to-print’): translation is charged per word, except in cases where there is a minimum fee (equivalent to one hour), or when the client requires a price per project; editing is also charged per word; proofreading is charged by the hour. Recently I have been doing PEMT for one client paid by the hour. That being said, there are exceptions: I may from time to time decide that I'm willing to do a job for less than my normal rate for a bunch of reasons and I do work pro bono at times…
