When I was a student, I taught German to Japanese kindergarten kids in Duesseldorf - very exhausting but fun.
Later, after I had finished university, I went to Japan, and my first job was to teach German in one of those countless semi-professional language schools that serve more to entertain the students than to actually teach them. It was almost as exhausting as those kindergarten kids, and much less fun. Luckily I found a "real" job after a while.

I am a teacher because it is mainly my profession according to my studies. I had only private students, and great results they called me to let me know they got the highest mark. Sometimes I think I missed something, not being actually a full time teacher.

... I was a trainer (both technical and HRD, management) for many years.
A teacher supposedly imparts knowledge.
A trainer, of course, imparts some knowledge, but the emphasis is on developing skills - my case.
My most frequent course of all times was one on Time Management, I led it 76 times for a consulting company.
My wife is an ESL teacher. Our house rule is simple:

In order to prepare myself and the training material I had to read a lot of books in French, English and Spanish and to translate parts of them: these were my very first steps as a translator…

I was on the adjunct faculty teaching Spanish at Wayne State University for six semesters in the early 90s. Then I moved to Spain, where I taught English at a couple of after-school academies before finding a job at a private international school on the Costa del Sol, where I started out teaching Spanish to all grade levels, but eventually ended up also teaching British History to Years 7 and 8, GSCE Modern International History and GCSE Child Care and Development. I loved the teaching part of these jobs, but the administration and paperwork were burdensome and so I really don't miss it. I'm very happy as a translator. ▲ Collapse

I taught EFL to executives in-company and individuals in language institutes for 8 years here in Chile. It was good preparation for translating because students ask you how to say such-and-such in English. Also, after awhile, you learn to correct their direct translations and grammar mistakes.

I'm a retired Spanish teacher. I taught Spanish as a Native Language and also as a Second Language for 33 yrs. to high school students. Five of those years were back in my country, Puerto Rico, and the rest were I currently live, Boston, MA. There is no doubt that teaching is a challenging career, but the rewards of teaching are innumerable. Children are our future and helping shape their future is pretty amazing. After the uni I had to work as an English teacher--5-11th grades/forms--often more than 30 students in the group/class! Some 48 hours a week for some $300 a month, whereas a simple test paper was $20-$50. You read it correctly: five-six test papers, which took about six hours, equalled to arduous teaching for a month, including out-of-school activities, events, students' homework, papers and so on.
However, except a few bright stars, it was so frustrating to motivate and educate tho... Yes, I've been a teacher, both in high-schools and in English courses. Both were very poorly remunerated, with a heavy work load, and the students' yielding was never close to satisfactory. The resources made available by the shcools were always a lot less than required. (All this was in Brazil). I do not wish to be a teacher in Brazil ever again. When and if the education methods and the students' mentality changes, I might try it again, because I really enjoyed teaching, appart from the local ...
