Dear colleagues,

Wikiproject Medicine, Wikimedia Canada and Translators Without Borders have launched a project to improve about 80 critical Wikipedia articles on health care and then to translate them into simple English, and from there onto as many other languages as possible.

This project is expected to have a strong impact as regards health care for the many languages that do not have widely available information. It will extended in time but the average work load should be light and deadlines flexible.

Translation takes place in Translators without Borders Translation Center and the project has been launched in 14 languages so far, namely Bengali, Bulgarian, Croatian, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog and Turkish.

Translators without Borders is looking for professional volunteers with experience in medicine translations. There are two different roles available in this project:

  • Language lead: they are the PMs and editors in any given target language and are expected to reassemble files translated by other colleagues (i.e. translators) and edit them for quality and consistency. Glossary and translation memory handling, and interaction with Wikipedians are also part of this role's description.

  • Translator: translators are those in charge of translating articles into a target language. Language leads can also act as translators, but their main objective is overall quality.

Given the nature of the project, only translators from English into other languages are being recruited for it. Besides, the project does not involve translation into languages in which Wikipedia already has plenty of information, in particular Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and German.

Languages from Africa and India are particularly valuable for this project.

If you are interested in fulfilling any of the roles described above and take part in this exciting project, please submit a support request.

Also, please don't hesitate to post below if you have any questions.

Thanks in advance!

Just a suggestion May 24, 2012

At other professional organizations and companies, I have seen "language lead" or "language leader" as the name for the role described above as "language owner".
It is true that the person takes ownership, but not of the language, only the tasks, the projects, and only for a while. That's why I think that in this case, any wording involving "leader" is more appropriate and less controversial than "owner". Since the volunteers are professionals, such details are important for the overall i

But again, it is just a suggestion.
