If I understand it correctly, they mean to say that this elderly person has done them many favors before, and they are trying to pay him back by one final act of 'charity'..... If I am wrong then this has to be the worst sample of translation I have ever made, which still deserves a point :o)

يبدو أن معظمنا لا يتابع مباريات كرة القدم! فهذا اسم رئيس اللجنة الرئيسية للحكام بالاتحاد السعودي لكرة القدم ، وفي الحقيقة اسمه مثيب الجعيد ولكن ربما يستخدم اسمه بطريقة ساخرة ويبدو أنه قد نتجت عداوات كثيرة بسبب التحكيم ولذلك تقرأون الشتائم في المقالات التي يرد اسمه فيها. لاحظوا في نهاية النص العربي ذكر الفريق، الأمر الذي جعلني أتأكد أن الإشارة هي إليه

Actually, your answer was not far off from the truth, since the writer is playing on words, ثواب مثيب and جعيد متجعد so in a way, he was saying that about him but he meant the name. Thank you for your support.
