Se sentir petit

Non-PRO French to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters interview of an artist
Il s’agit surtout de se sentir plus petit, de remettre les choses et les gens à leur place, à leur échelle, et faire en sorte que le respect se réinstalle.

L'artiste indique ici son but lorsqu'il réalise une oeuvre. Existe-t'il une expression toute faite ? Peut-être "feeling smaller" ?

Non-PRO (3): Catharine Cellier-Smart, Rob Grayson, Chris Hall

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

I think you get hung up on the phrase rather on the meaning of the sentence.

Cut oneself down to size

The artist seems to be talking about about putting things into perspective, not blowing things out of proportion etc. so I feel that a reference to "size" is important here.

"smaller than life"

By analogy with the idiomatic expression "larger than life".

I'd put quotes.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chris Hall : No need for an idiomatic expression here and no need for any quotes.

feeling smaller

Je crois que vous avez raison: it is really about feeling smaller, putting things and people back in their place, etc. La notion d'humilité y est sous-entendue, mais sans doute s'agit-il aussi du sens concret de l'expression en relation aux oeuvres de l'artiste. Je ne crois pas qu'il faille surinterpréter le texte d'origine.
Peer comment(s):

agree Evans (X) : this is how I would put it, there is no reason to overtranslate here, the expression in English has the same sense as the French.

French term (edited): Se sentir plus petit

to relativize one's size

to relativize one's size, so as to avoid feeling we're the tallest beings in creation. A man is an insect copmpared to a lofty mountain, for instance.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Chris Hall : Not appropriate in this context. Would be appropriate for a philosophy dissertation i.e. "what is the meaning of life" kind of stuff.

being brought down a peg or two

Hello,

If you insist on not using "feeling smaller", then go for something more idiomatic like I proposed.

I hope this helps.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Sheila Wilson : That's a very negative expression, which I don't see in the source text // I agree that "made to feel humble" and "made to feel small" are similar to "being brought down a peg or two" but the source doesn't imply that, simply humility/humbleness of self
34 mins
Hi Sheila. "Being brought down a peg or two" is no different than being made to feel humble. I get your point, but how is the person being made to feel humble? When we are humbled, or feel humbled, we're knocked down a peg or two, imho.

to know one's place in the cosmos...

or to be aware of the insignificance of one's puny self as one crawls upon the great dungheap of life.... Or is that a bit too purple, even for an artist??
