Discussion

Susan Welsh Mar 22, 2012:
The actual sentence... would be helpful.
katerina turevich Mar 22, 2012:
I wonder... if one can say "Mutually imposed solitude", as best expression of what goes on in a situation like this. I suppose it's when two people literally push each other into silence.
Amy Lesiewicz Mar 22, 2012:
Anna Akhmatova I immediately thought of the Anna Akhmatova poem "The Last Toast," which uses these words. Here's one translation:
I drink to our ruined house,
to all of life’s evils too,
to our ***mutual loneliness***,
and I, I drink to you –
to eyes, dead and cold,
to lips, lying and treacherous,
to the age, coarse, and cruel,
to the fact no god has saved us.

loneliness together

или solitude together, тоже часто встречается.
Peer comment(s):

agree Amy Lesiewicz : I like "loneliness" better than "solitude" because it has the right emotional connotation. "Solitude" means being alone - happily or unhappily. "Loneliness" can only mean unhappily alone.
