FVA Not for points English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting titles of art works
hi, I'm new to the forum so don't know if this is the right place to post this question.
I have a general question regarding the translation of art work titles in English. I am currently translating a catalogue for an exhibition and most of the titles have already been translated into English. For the titles of each short description, would you only use the English titles or rather leave them in German and put the English in brackets? NB this is the first time the title is mentioned!

Thanks!

Put them in English with the german in parenthesis

Put them in English with the german in parenthesis - since they have already been translated into English and the catalog is in English.

translate, unless well-known

I'm Italian, but this is a question of style. AP style may explain why a few titles weren't translated

Translate Foreign Works and Titles Into English
Unless the title of a work is well-known in its foreign language, always translate the title or work into English, remembering that the goal of AP style is to simplify the reader's job, not complicate it.

Examples include:

•Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" not "Die Verwandlung"
•Maupassant's "The Necklace" not "La Parure
•But "Die Walkuere" and "Gotterdammerung" from Wagner's "The Ring of the Nibelungen"

This means you would probably have to translate them all

see also under Naming articles:

Books, movies and other media that were translated or renamed for their English publication or distribution should be created using the name they are best known by English speakers. Camus' novel would be found at The Stranger and not by its orignal title L'Étranger.
