neutral Fida Malki (X) : Although refused may work, yet I somehow feel that "insisted" would fit better. As in, they've insisted to remain among their people/not to leave their people and that you are to be the only conqueror.

Insist is the translation for أصرّ, note how to accommodate itو you had to reverse what is after making it (to remain/not to leave) while it is (to leave) in the source. I am very used to this verb, it is my national anthem that I sang since childhood
