discovery
Literally, procedures for exchanging briefs/pleadings. In US courts I don't think the adversaries trade briefs or pleas, but they are supposed to share evidence, and I think that happens during the "discovery" phase of a trial. But I only play a lawyer on the web; this is a wild guess.
