Determining "équivalences" is the job of committees. By way of an example, a US High School diploma will not necessarily entitle you to access in a French university; if you have the baccalauréat, you are entitled to register in the first year of a course of study in France. Likewise, if you have the French baccalauréat, you have to go through a particular administrative process to enter a British university for example. They might be "equivalent" in terms of number of years spent in a particular educational system, each having a particular diploma or set of diplomas at the end of a certain number of years and at a particular age for example. However, beyond that, what each diploma entitles you to do and where varies. As a result, they are not translatable as such.

agree Yolanda Broad : Absolutely: this is a degree, not a term, and doesn't have an exact equivalent in English. The addition of the parenthetical explanation, is a good idea, too.

Le terme baccalauréat peut être traduit, puisque, aux Etats-Unis, par exemple, on trouve un enseignement équivalent et au contenu similaire.
Ce que je propose est plus une mise en équivalence qu'une traduction. Si vous voulez vous présenter à certains concours de la fonction publique européenne, vous devrez justifier du baccalauréat si vous êtes un ressortissant français ou d'un A-levels ou équivalent si vous êtes citoyen(ne) du Royaume-Uni. Aux Etats-Unis, le diplôme qui sanctionne des études similaires et équivalentes à notre baccalauréat "économique et social" (B autrefois, aujourd'hui ES) est le high school diploma in economic and social sciences

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Suitable if you indicate that it is the English/US equivalent in terms of age, number of years at school etc. For Scotland it is different again. I think it preferable to retain "baccalauréat".

Why in terms of age ??? We can retain “baccalauréat”, but the Britiish reader will not necessarily situate its level. Its translation/equivalence would be a “landmark” for him, make the translation easier to be read. Don’t forget the localization either!

Here, the mattter is not exactly to translate, but to find an equivalence. As I wrote, A-levels is, for UK, an approximative translation. For US, there is both an eaquivalence and a translation : high school diploma etc. So, why not use it ?!
