German term

Dreisatzaufgabe

German to English Science Mathematics & Statistics
A Dreisatzaufgabe is a question (e.g. in an intelligence test) of the type:-

21 Lastwagen transportieren 35 Tonnen Abraum an einem Arbeitstag. Wie viel Tonnen Abraum schaffen in derselben Zeit 15 Lastwagen?
or

2 Kühe fressen an einem Tag 48 kg Gras. Wie viel kg Gras fressen 5 Kühe in 6 Stunden?

What do we call that type of problem in English?

Discussion

Manticore (X) May 24, 2011:
to all parties concerned I have hidden my answer "rules of three assignment". I amnot wasting my time any longer
Armorel Young (asker) May 24, 2011:
The Oxford dictionary does indeed define "rule of three" as "a method of finding a number in the same ratio to one given as exists between two others given", but I'm not sure that the term is widely understood. For what it's worth, I asked a 30-year-old with a first-class maths degree from Cambridge if he knew what a "rule of three" problem was and he had no idea. Googling "rule of three" produces references to a wide range of topics, often to do with including 3 main points in a talk or presentation.
Manticore (X) May 24, 2011:
@Mr Paul Skidmore There is no need to agree with me. The reason you are agreeing with somedody else's answer is, however, ludicrous. When you went to school, there was no SMS, no page file and no Airbus 380.
Manticore (X) May 24, 2011:
@ jccantrall The answer to your question would be 20 days, because they are in each others way. - This problem is also not the same type as the examples stated by the asker.
jccantrell May 23, 2011:
And I always knew these things as "algebra problems." Something like this:
"Say Frank can build a model airplane in 3 days, Jo can do it in 2, but Moe can only do it in 5 days. If they work together, they’ll build a model plane in:"
This falls into the SAT algebra section (among other problems).

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : post-grading: I disagree with this solution here but, hey, it's only me :-)

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm actually not an awful lot the wiser - I accept that this is technically the correct answer, but I'm not convinced that the term is widely understood. However, "algebra problem" or "reasoning problem" seems too general, as the reference is to a quite specific type of problem. I used "rule of three" in my translation, although with some reservations."

reasoning exercise/puzzle with three variables

I don't think we have a specific term for this kind of brain teaser. If you need to coin one, then maybe something like "reasoning exercise/puzzle with three variables".

Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Skidmore : certainly when I was at school in the UK in the 70s and 80s we didn't have a specific word for this type of algebra / reasoning problem

I'm not entering this term as an answer because I don't know if it would be "widely understood" in the UK.
