I'm confused here. Crostini can't be croutons as I don't see how you'd be able to place a soce of tomato on a crouton. Nor is it clear where these "tartine" suddenly leap out from. Any clues? TIA

Here, we're simply talking about medium-sized pieces of toasted bread. Large croutons, if you want, but the recipe is apparently calling for something like slices of toasted bread, smaller than a full slice, but bigger than a crouton. You could be creative and say something like "bed of toast" or "base of toast" as well.

I don't think that it is croutons in this case, I see croutons as being diced toasted bread, used in soups. Crostini is a starter.

: Wendell: when in Italy look for "il libro delle bruschette" and you will see plenty of patè bruschette. Daniela: in the menu of the restaurant where I used to work "croutons" were slices of bread with paté de foie gras. I think that crouton is an option.

like I said, if it's mainstream enough for the BBC to use it, that's a good enough benchmark for me. There will be some people who don't understand it, but that holds true for any of the foreign words we use in English. Wasabi? Teriyaki? Gumbo? Falafel?
