Italian term

pianificatori, urbanisti

Italian to English Other Environment & Ecology
I would translate both these terms as "planners", but I have a text (from a proposed Atlas on the European Delta areas, this particular text referring to the Po delta) that uses them one after the other:

"Nel caso della ricerca sul delta del Po invece gli obiettivi finali, la metodologia e gli strumenti di ricerca per raggiungerli sono stati discussi e condivisi con urbanisti, pianificatori e architetti del paesaggio."

[my attempt]:
"Instead, in the case of research on the Po delta, the final objectives, methodology and research tools to achieve them were discussed and shared with urban planners, designers and landscape architects."

Designers here is a vague guess, not good in this context also because the text speaks of "communication designers", so this translation would likely mislead the reader to think it's referring to that. Any suggestions for an alternate translation for either of the above terms?

Thanks,

Peter

I too will second Oliver's support for versus questions. Are these two terms synonyms are not? is a very important question. Of course, it can be simply asked by posting one terme and putting the other as the first part of the context.
Peter Waymel (asker) Nov 5, 2012:
Just to second Oliver's assessment of the value of 'x vs. y' posts on Proz; it may seem an attempt to obtain two translations with a single posting, but it's actually a much-needed (and helpful, as remarked) exercise in obtaining clarity of one term vis-a-vis another. Thanks to the moderator who allowed my query to be posted.
Oliver Lawrence Nov 5, 2012:
"X vs Y" questions FWIW, IMHO questions like this, where two similar terms are compared and contrasted, are very useful - contrary to ProZ policy, which seems to want to pursue an unachievable goal of glossary "purity".

@Howard If you had posted it, you would have beaten me I think :-)
Howard Sugar Nov 5, 2012:
Urbanisti are usually referred to as Urban Planners. So you might distinguish them as as something like urban and other planners (perhaps regional) . I would not put designers.

regional and urban planners

I have done loads of translations for urban planners (town and country planners in the UK, answer given is more US but all terms are used interchangeably worldwide).
The DIAP - Dipartimento di Architettura e Pianificazione www.diap.polimi.it/ at Milan Polytechnic is full of urbanisti who sometimes call themselves pianificatori. They are the same thing, unless you want to make very fine distintions.
The term (urban) design, tends more towards architecture and the micro scale, so I would tend to leave it out and add "regional" to cover the Po' Delta. This author was just being "exhaustive" and redundant.

This is from a translation I am doing right now. It is written by an architect who clearly uses "pianificatore" as a direct sysnomym for urbanista.

"Dal punto di vista del pianificatore, Maria Cristina Treu , docente di urbanistica ed esperta di pianificazione ambientale sostenibile e valutazione dei grandi progetti di intervento territoriale..."

MC Treu is "professore ordinario di Urbanistica del Politecnico di Milano dal 1994"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Jim. I like Tom's explanation of urbanist as opposed to planners, though. It's helpful to see how these two roles differ. "

Italian term (edited): pianificatori vs. urbanisti

planners vs. urbanists

A planner is technician with the outlook of a bureaucrat. An urbanist is a planner who does everything a planner does, but who also studies and reflects upon the culture of cities.
Peer comment(s):

neutral James (Jim) Davis : Aren't you splitting hairs Tom? So would there be no urbanists in the Milan Polytechnic Diap just architects and planners. Also, what then is the difference between an urbanist, an urban planner, a town and country planner, // all the room you need above!

There isn't room in this little box to explain what the difference is !
