Alexander Onishko
: good option but it wouls sound even better in the for like "somebody's den" - did not you heard it in that form? ||| e.g. drunkards' den?

Thanks, Alexander. On the street people just say "den". Obviously you can "color" it with some nouns of adjectives. Again, context is key.

: Now that the *ahem* context is clearer, this seems a good choice indeed. ;)

Thank you, Luke. I also agree with your comment regarding the Urban Dictionary. I always say, "never understimate the power of **** context". ;-)

Lena Nemeth
: Sorry for the disagree -- for me, 'den' has the connotation of an opium den and not a place where alcohol is served...

Luke Evans
: I love the reference, but it's a bit ambiguous (joint really could be any kind of place, e.g. "hamburger joint") and dated.

: The Urban Dictionary is charming, but the entries are whatever the users contributed... Any dictionary can be wrong, and this one in particular.

According to that great bastion of knowledge, Wikipedia, a dive bar is a type of bar or pub [that] generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere—they are often referred to by local residents as 'neighborhood bars,' where people in the neighborhood ga
disagree |
Darius Saczuk
: Nope. A "dive" is a a bar/restaurant with cheap booze, while a "melina" is a private residence (but not a bar) frequented by bums, where booze flows freely and people often do drugs. No problem. ;-)

Aha, I was focused on the 'alcohol' bit -- thanks for the clarification!

I'm going to permit myself to adopt a prescriptive tone on this occasion: urbandictionary.com should NOT be relied upon by translators, especially given the potential for gaffes when translating slang.
