Hi all,

I'm currently facing a problem that I hope somebody can help me with. (SDL Trados 8.2.0.835)

Hi all,

I'm currently facing a problem that I hope somebody can help me with. (SDL Trados 8.2.0.835)

I'm working with a big TM. About 1/3 of the segments in this TM are from my previous translations, the other 2/3 were provided by the client (from previous translations by other translators). Unfortunately, quite a few of the tranlations by the other translators are far from being perfect and need to be corrected.

The project I'm currently working on has a lot of 100% matches. I don't want to change strings that I translated previously but I would like to double-check those from the other translators. At this stage, I don't really want to open each and every segment individually but would like to use the Translate to Fuzzy option to skip all 100% matches that contain my previous translations. However, I would like to check those 100% matches that were translated by other people.

I thought it would be possible to use a filter or something that would apply a penalty to all segments that do not have my name in the 'Created by' field but I have not been able to set this up. The only fields that I can select in the Project and Filter Settings dialog are Status, Domain, Context and Source File, which isn't much help.

Does anybody know whether it's possible at all to set up something like this?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Claudia

You can export the TM, find-and-replace the user IDs in question with "ALIGN!" (without the quotes) and then import the whole shebang back into your TM, overwriting everything.

Now you can use the alignment penalty slider to adjust the degree to which the match rate is reduced whenever Trados encounters one of those segments.

Note that you should only do this on a temporary copy of your TM, used only during this translation, as there may be no way to revert the replace

HTH,
Benjamin

P.S.: On a sidenote, are you sure you're getting paid quite enough for editing those other translators' work? If their translations are REALLY bad, a re-negotiation of your translation fee might be in order.

Absolutely. This is the only solution we have found...

Hi Benjamin,

Thanks for your reply.

I hadn't thought of this because I was hoping there would be an easier (or more reversible...) solution. The filter/penalty approach is available in SDLX, and I was hoping that Trados had something similar. Apparently it doesn't.

Of course! - I have made sure that I will be paid for the work that I'm putting into this.

Thanks again for your help.

Best regards,
Claudia

Reversible etc. May 30, 2008

Good to hear they're paying you well enough.

Well, while the modification may not be reversible in the working TM, as long as you keep an unmodified copy and clean your translation into that, the solution I posted should be perfectly workable.

One final tip: Do not use the Windows Notepad applet for the replace operation - it might take ages depending on the size of the TM, so use either Word or another fast edi

Thanks for another great tip, Ben. I've wondered about how to deal with precisely that issue in the past and never found a good solution except to charge full rate for anything that wasn't in the TM I maintained myself for those clients.

As far as fast editors are concerned, the Windows editor WordPad is actually very fast for search and replace. You're right about Notepad - excruciatingly slow.

Done! May 30, 2008

Hi Benjamin,

I have followed your advice and replaced the user names. Even though this turned out to be quite a bit of work (there were more user names than I had expected), the result is great.

I'm pretty sure that this will save me quite a bit of time.

Thanks again for your help, and have a nice weekend.

Best regards,
Claudia
