Science currently recognizes over 110 different elements, and all the matter in our world is comprised of these elements. A small portion of them is used as pure elements in day-to-day life, such as oxygen (in ambulances and hospitals), mercury (in thermometers), or tungsten (the filament in a light bulb). Most of the elements are used in daily life as a component of a mixture or the main element of a compound.
Mixture- A number of materials mixed together in variable proportions. In a mixture, each component maintains its own qualities, and the qualities of the mixture are the sum of the qualities of its components.
Lemonade is an example of a mixture. It is a liquid (like the water), tangy (from the lemon) and also sweet (from the sugar). A lemonade mixture can be prepared with more lemon or less lemon, as with the sugar. As previously stated, the ratio of quantities is not predefined and obligatory.
Compound- A number of substances that together create new matter. The ratio of the component quantities is fixed.
Being new matter, all the qualities of the components are not preserved and usually, new qualities that none of the components previously possessed are obtained.
An example of a compound is water. The oxygen and hydrogen comprising water are gases, where one is flammable and the other participates in combustion. In contrast, water is a liquid that extinguishes combustion.
When two metals are melted, mixed together, and cooled, a new solid called an alloy is obtained.
An alloy is neither exclusively a mixture, nor a compound. For example, a soldering iron used to solder electronics is an alloy of tin and lead. The melting point of tin is 232˚C and lead is 327˚C. In contrast, the soldering iron alloy already melts at temperatures ranging from 150˚C-200˚C. We can therefore see that with regards to melting temperatures, the qualities of the components are not preserved, and the alloy behaves like a compound in this regard.
However, there is a soldering iron (called 60/40) that contains 60% tin and 40% lead, and there is another type that contains 40% tin and 60% lead (called 40/60). The former is more pliable and melts at a slightly lower temperature than the latter, which is less pliable. According to these qualities, their uses also differ: for delicate soldering where it is important not to reach high temperatures, a 60/40 soldering iron is used, whereas a 40/60 soldering iron is used for soldering wires where the strength of the connection is important and the wires are not sensitive to a relatively high temperature. We can see that regarding the quantity ratios of the components, this alloy behaves more like a mixture.
Since an alloy behaves like neither a mixture nor a compound in all cases, it is given the special name alloy.
