Should any of the registered participant not finalize with payment his/her attendance to this course, is there any chance to take his/her place? When in case would this deadline occur? G'day everyone (and Tess)
Since this training is about web sites, I think it is fair play to take a look at the trainer's own web site and ask her to comment on some of its aspects (i.e. give reasons for her decisions), don't you agree? I realise that the actual web site design is but a small part of this training (the bulk of it seems to be aimed at marketing while using a web site and not on web site creation itself).

I realise that the actual web site design is but a small part of this training (the bulk of it seems to be aimed at marketing while using a web site and not on web site creation itself).
Size of the site
When I visited the trainer's web site, the browser downloaded 350 kb of data before anything was displayed on the screen. I happened to be on a slowish connection when I visited it (fast for this country, but slow by international standards), and it took 24 seconds before anything appeared on screen. My own web site, by comprison, takes 6 seconds to appear (with an empty cache). The total download size of the trainer's web site's first page is 1.6 MB. Isn't this a bit excessive, even in this day and age of fast internet?
The five biggest files on the site include 3 images and 2 .js files. The purpose of the .js files is to make the menus look nice. The biggest image is a picture of the trainer herself, at 379 kb, 1052x1263 pixels large (though on the web site it is displayed as 64x79, thanks to the ability to specify an image's display size using HTML)
Page identity
I realise that a web site should have a theme that is followed throughout the site, i.e. a type of branding that makes the user feel at home with all the pages, but I'm concerned that the pages of the trainer's web site look so alike that one might be mistaken for thinking that a page did not load, even though it did load (because the second page looks nearly identical to the first page unless you look carefully). Is this a good thing? For example, the "Translation" page looks the same as the "Home" page except for the text in the middle column, which differs between the pages only from about 2/3 down the screen.
Links wanting to be links
I find the link colour confusing -- links are blue but not underlined, and the page contains other blue text that are not links. The user can only determine whether a piece of text is a link after he has hovered his mouse over the text. Perhaps this is part of the chosen blog style sheet and the trainer can't do anything about it.

As I have missed out on this valuable opportunity, I wonder if a second Webinar about creating a freelance translator website has been scheduled at a later date? | | | abufaraz פקיסטן Local time: 07:04 מאנגלית לאורדו + ... I have the same request | Jan 3, 2011 |
and would be grateful if the dates of the next course on this topic are announced here. | |

Well, apparently 50 people have already paid. I registered a few days ago and received an e-mail shortly after that stating the course was full and I would not be able to participate. I think it would be nice to set a "pay by" date for the first 50 who register and give them a chance to pay by that date before giving others the option to register and pay.
I just simply forgot all about it and a short reminder would have prompted me to pay immediately... | | | Tess Whitty ארצות הברית Local time: 19:04 חבר (2004) מאנגלית לשוודית Re: Comments on trainers own website | Jan 3, 2011 |
Thank you Samuel for your feedback on my website. Any suggestions for improvements are always welcome. I have to say I am not always happy with the results if the webpage is slow to load and will discuss this with the person working on it. I have not had any problems with loading the site though. It can also be the combination of having it on Wordpress and hosting it on ProZ Cpanel. The communication between these two seem to take up a lot of bandwith. We are in the process of moving it to another host.
I will also take into consideration your complaint of the pages looking identical. What I will be teaching next week is stuff that people can do themselves as a start, using simple hosting programs and templates. After moving my site to Wordpress I have to say I am not entirely happy all the time since I do not have enough expertise with Wordpress. I might go back to practicing what I preach instead.
As for Frances and aburiaz. As far as I can see there are 10 spots left so I hope you will be able to attend. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Create a website for your freelance translation business Pastey | Your smart companion app
