I’m one of those “dinosaurs” who don’t work with a CAT tool (there are still some of us left…), but I must say that I’ve used Deepl very, very occasionally (when I am tired or have some pain in my right hand) as a very rough draft just to speed the typing up a bit.

Yes. I "make use" of them, but that doesn't mean I find them satisfactory; far from it.

What makes machine translation so interesting in my language pairs is the auto-suggest function (contributes to quality and to speed at the same time), which is only offered in machine translation apps and not inside CAT tools (as far as I know, at least). Working almost exclusively for agencies that provide me with prepared CAT tool files most of the time, it also wouldn't be appreciated if I would use machine translation in the files itself when I'm asked for a conventional translation. Working almost exclusively for agencies that provide me with prepared CAT tool files most of the time, it also wouldn't be appreciated if I would use machine translation in the files itself when I'm asked for a conventional translation. Besides that, I also would have to upgrade my MT engine subscription because the current one doesn't offer the possibility to integrate MT in my CAT tool directly.

Of course when I'm asked to post-edit, the files are already machine pre-translated and in that case I obviously work with MT inside my CAT tool (but without the auto-suggest function and that's actually a handicap since all changes have to be manually applied).

I'm posting no, but I'm not sure if I understand the question. I mean the part about "inside your CAT".

everything disabled in all my CAT tools.
What I get to review in my language pair shows that I may be the last one. Dullness is the way forward.

Within my CAT tool, I only use my own translation memory and dictionaries I compiled or those supplied by my clients. I try really hard to avoid machine translation post-editing jobs in general, because I find them mind-numbing.

I do use my own TMs in my CAT tools, but when it comes to MT, I find it way more tedious to edit its often dodgy results than to translate everything from scratch myself.
That said, I do like to use DeepL (browser version) to support my work, especially for legal translations. Hands down, DeepL is way better at weird German Legalese than I am.

MT inside Feb 2, 2023

I suspect they refer to MT plug-ins, free or paid, that can be enabled/disabled/subscribed to in major CAT tools. I know Trados, Cafetran and MemoQ offer such features. As far as I gather, they're some sorts of online services which CAT tools connect to to regurgitate a "translation". I'm sure they're very helpful for country lists.

50% of translators say "No". Really? Feb 2, 2023

This is enlightening
Really
Wow
Perhaps this is why many translators are not citing any increase in turnover over the last 15 years (!)
Not criticizing, just surprised

At this point, in 2023, I see not using a good MT tech inside a good CAT as the equivalent of not using a computer, but sticking to a typewriter

I said no, but I'm not among those many translators. I doubled my turnover since 2006.

You don't need CAT integrated MT to use MT while translating. I use an indirect way through the DeepL app. That process is slightly slower than working with CAT integrated MT, but that is mostly compensated by the auto-suggest function that allows you to turn over a complete sentence with just one single clic, that also allows for better translation quality (because of the suggestions) and that finally reduces the risk of stupid mistakes because there is way less typing involved.

I don't use MT full stop.

I think constant exposure to computer-generated language would dull my linguistic instincts and take away half the fun of the creative process.

Like using TMs provided by an agency.

Many of us don't translate simple, repetitive texts, in which case neither MT nor CAT will be an advantage.

Never in a thousand years Feb 2, 2023

Sometimes I feel like the only person on this planet who thinks that the output of all MT is still unreliable garbage, and yes, that includes DeepL.

There was one CAT tool I had to use once that had an MT plugin pre-installed, and I disabled it very quickly, right after noticing that the pop-up with the suggested machine translation blew me completely off-track and made me use the machine's way of writing rather than my own, because it was the first thing that entered my brain. There was one CAT tool I had to use once that had an MT plugin pre-installed, and I disabled it very quickly, right after noticing that the pop-up with the suggested machine translation blew me completely off-track and made me use the machine's way of writing rather than my own, because it was the first thing that entered my brain. And believe me - this machine-suggested writing is never going to be as good as doing it yourself from scratch.

Nowadays I think I do about as much edition as I do translation, and at this point I can recognise MT or "MT-assisted" translation within 15 minutes, because it always produces the same kinds of glaring red flags. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks this is something that produces good translation that can be used within a professional capacity is deluded. In fact it's downright horrifying to me how often I have to deal with these kinds of hackjobs these days, where the translator lets a machine do the majority of the work for him and then calls it a day after applying the smallest modicum of effort to edit it (if even that). It's simply a terrible practice that drags this entire profession into the mud.

Not to mention how disrespectful of my own time and work as an editor I find it to be.

Funnily, even without constant exposure, some fellow translators don't seem to understand the original question: do you use MT within your CAT tool? They read it like 'What do you think about MT?'

I use only one MT engine with one of my best clients and... because I know how to use it, I don't drag my profession (that I respect so much) into the mud.
And, I forgot... I love CAT tools even when they crash and tell me:
