Profitability Feb 13

In translation (even MTPE), if you have good subject expertise, a good TM, etc., your productivity improves and you make more money/hour than you expected. In data annotation, this seems much harder to achieve. Everything is rigorously railroaded, tightly controlled, onboarding alone requires significant (usually unpaid) effort, and, in my experience, you end up making actually less money/hour than you expected. But I'd love to hear from somebody who's achieved the opposite with data annotation,... See more

No objection Feb 13

I would have no objection to doing it, if I'm paid by the hour, at a reasonable hourly rate. I have no ethical or moral issue with doing it.

I'm OK with that... Feb 13

...if paid at a reasonable rate.

But Tech bros won't pay you that rate you expected. They are saving money to buy GPUs.

Bring it on Feb 13

I'd love to.

But clients aren't even looking for MTPE or annotation anymore.

They're just...gone. I suppose they're just using AI with no QC at all. And the AI is only going to get better.

I think this profession is just about gone. It's disappearing.

If you still get traditional "translation" work ... count your lucky stars. I don't know you you're doing it, but...hats off.

It basically means Feb 13

Iulia Parvu wrote:

It in essence means teaching AI to be better at pretending to be human - making more difficult for humans to know if what they read / hear / see was created by some 'pretend intelligence' or actual humans.

Augmented Ignorance is a dumb as would be a new born baby with a HUUUGE memory someone already filled with all sort of facts - but the content of which 'means' absolutely nothing to the baby.

So someone needs to patiently explain to the total dumbo what is the real world meaning of what's in its memory. Like to somenone who just landed from Mars

A cynic could be tempted to uncharitably call this kind of 'work' digging your own grave - and to add insult top injury, doing it for micro-peanuts.

Here we go again Feb 13

Yet another AI poll.

As Maria Teresa stated correctly, I'm not an annotator, either.

AI annotation work Feb 13

AI annotation jobs typically pay $7 to $12 an hour. Many of these are located in India.

They don't want to pay Feb 13

There is no matter whether you are willing to do or not. IT companies, agencies not even consider to think about paying a translator.

It is killing the industry before time. And employer from the countries like India or Middle-East, who always think of a translator as typist, it is disaster. If any have second career option or enough saving for the future then they have God by their side.

And, you're still busy? Translating? Feb 13

I'm genuinely curious.

In Spain, the translation sector is DISAPPEARING.
Agencies are closing.
Clients are disappearing.
The profession is vanishing.

You're still translating, without any kind of AI, at the same rates?

That's just over, here. It's gone.

And you're still busy?

Really??

I'm interested. In Spain, translation is disappearing. Period.

Hallucinations Feb 13

Justin Peterson wrote:

Can you back this up with anything other than your own experience? According to Gemini you're hallucinating (AI pun intended).

Personally there's nil novi sub sole: I'm still doing fine and there are no serious indications things will get worse from here on the short and medium long term.

On-topic: I don't accept annotation work and I never will. Not as a matter of prinicple, but I'm only interested in translation and translation-related tasks ((post-)editing and proofreading). If there comes a time I no longer can make enough money with translation, I will leave the industry altogether instead of doing utterly boring peanut jobs for pocket money.
