Master Course in Translation and Paratranslation




Course name:

Master course in Translation and Paratranslation.
It is a part of the training period of the PhD program in "Translation and Paratranslation".




Faculty of Philology and Translation

Goals:

To train professionals, academicians and researchers who are qualified to perform tasks with a high responsibility in the labour market, in research activities or in education -both in translation and interpreting and in linguistic and cultural mediation, as well as in intercultural studies. To offer a solid introduction in:

-Theories, history, politics and hermeneutics of translation and interpreting conceived as a dynamic of communication and interlinguistic, semiotic and intercultural hybridisation.

-Lexicology, terminology, edition and technologies applied to translation and interpreting.

Course outline:

This master course has 60 ECTS structured in 30 compulsory credits, 24 optional credits, 6 credits corresponding to the internship period which can be exchanged for optional credits and 6 credits assigned to the Final Master Project.

Compulsory credits will be taught during the first semester whereas the rest of them will be taught in the second one. In this second semester, the student will have to choose between one of the orientations available: Translation and Interpreting or Translation and Paratranslation.

Applicant profile:

Among the academic and personal features (sensitivities, flairs or specific abilities), the applicants should have the following ones:

-Interest, curiosity and sensitivity for research in Translation and Interpreting or in other fields.

-To be proficient at least in two foreign languages (being the Spanish, Galician or Portuguese one of them) and to have a good knowledge of their cultural contexts.

-Advanced abilities for oral and written communication and for reading comprehension in the first language and, at least, in one of the others.

-Abilities to appreciate translation and interpreting as a complex phenomenon in a changing and dynamic society within a more and more global context.

-Ability to accept and analyze linguistic and cultural diversity.

-Advanced abilities and sensitivity to handle tools permitting the information access.
