I would simply like to know how rates work for interpreting between English and French in Canada nowadays.

I would simply like to know how rates work for interpreting between English and French in Canada nowadays.

I would be interpreting for about half a day at a remote location in Canada and there would be about 50 people present. The interpreting would be consecutive, mostly conversational, and although I don't have formal interpreting experience, what I do have is a solid knowledge of the specific terminology used in both languages and a deep understanding of the particular topic being discussed.

I would be flying to a remote location in Canada and I would be spending the night. Naturally, transport and accommodation will be covered by the client. I was asked to provide an hourly rate, but my understanding is that this service is usually charged per day or per half day. My reasoning is that I would most likely be unavailable for any other work for two days. If I charged by the hour, I would only be charging for four or five hours, while I would be unavailable for two days. Of course, if the client really prefers to go by the hour, I don't mind, but then, I think I would have to charge a much higher rate in order to cover for missed opportunities.

Can anybody advise me as to what would be the sensible thing to do? Also, what are the going rates for consecutive interpreting?
